Edwards double-double leads Campbell past Bethune-Cookman, 66-55

DeLAND, Fla. – RaeChaun Edwards notched an assists-points double-double Saturday with 10 each, leading Campbell to a 66-55 win over Bethune-Cookman in the final game of the Hatter Classic.

Edwards was named to the all-tournament team, adding five rebounds and four steals against the Wildcats.

Campbell moves to 6-5 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 3-10.

Seniors Summer Leverette and Kiera Gaines each totaled 13 points for CU. Leverette was 5-for-6 from the floor, going 1-for-2 from three-point range, posting nine boards and a steal. Gaines shot 5-for-12 from the floor and 1-for-5 from beyond the arc and added eight rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

Kailyn Williams led the field with 14 points for the Wildcats on 6-for-17 shooting and tallied eight rebounds, two steals, two blocks, and an assist.

The Lady Camels shot 27-for-65 (41.5 pct.) from the field and 4-for-17 (23.5 pct.) from beyond the arc, making 8-of-10 (80.0 pct.) free throws. Bethune-Cookman was 22-of-69 (31.9 pct.) from the floor and 7-of-34 (20.6 pct.) from three-point range, shooting 4-of-9 (44.4 pct.) from the line.

The Lady Camels opened with a 12-6 lead, making two of its first three pointers in the first 4:30 of the game.

Bethune-Cookman answered with a 10-3 jump spanning nearly four minutes to take a 16-15 lead after the second media timeout, holding the Lady Camels to one basket, an Amanda Coffer three, over the same time.

Campbell broke through and retook the lead after a five-minute 15-2 run to lead 35-23. To begin the streak, the Lady Camels were 3-for-3 from the floor on layups from Leverette and Edwards and a Gaines three pointer. Coffer, Jessica Pone, and MaKala Rouse also notched a basket to widen the advantage.

The CU defense held the Wildcats to 2-for-12 shooting, not allowing a field goal for nearly eight minutes,  to end the half, as Bethune-Cookman put in a three with 55 seconds to go and Campbell took the 35-26 lead to the locker room.

Campbell opened the second half with a 14-7 advantage in the first eight minutes, increasing its lead to 49-33.

However, the Wildcats attempted the comeback on an 18-8 run spanning seven minutes to cut the CU lead to 57-51 with four minutes to go. The run included two Wildcat threes and a nearly three-minute scoring drought for the Lady Camels.

It was as close as the Wildcats could get to the Lady Camels, who finished the game on a 9-5 jump to secure the 66-55 victory and sixth win of the season.

The Lady Camels are back after the Christmas break in a 7 p.m. game on Dec. 30, hosting Presbyterian in Big South action.
