BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell overcame a sluggish first half to defeat Johnson and Wales 63-38 Monday night at Gore Arena.
Coming off final exams, the Camels led by 10 at the break; then made 10 of their first 15 shots in the final period. Campbell led by as many as 26 before head coach Kevin McGeehan emptied his bench.
The Camels (2-5) ended a five-game losing streak and held JWU to the lowest point total in a game since Gore Arena opened in 2008-09. The lowest point total scored by a Camel foe at the facility prior to Monday night was 45 by Florida Gulf Coast on Jan. 14, 2010.
D.J. Mason and Luke Moyer came off the bench to lead Campbell with 9 points each, while Andrew Ryan and Reco McCarter added 8 apiece for CU, which made 8-of-14 threes after the break, 12-of-30 (.400) for the game.
Moyer made 3-of-5 threes and did not commit a turnover in 15 minutes of action. Ryan sank a pair of threes and dealt four assists without a turnover, while Kyre' Hamer and Curtis Phillips each grabbed six rebounds.
Rickey Porter led Johnson and Wales (4-7) with eight points, while Andrew Williams tallied seven plus seven boards. JWU shot just 27 percent from the field (15-55) and 3-of-17 (.176) from 3-point range.
"It was good to come out and have the chance to play again after exams," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan. "I thought we played well defensively all game. We were pressing on offense and had some sloppy turnovers, but it was good to get a win."
The Camels grabbed a 10-point half-time advantage (26-16) despite shooting just 33 percent (9-27) from the floor. JWU made only 6-of-25 (.240) from the floor in the first period.
Campbell led 37-22 before Ryan's right corner three started a 15-4 burst. Nehemiah Mabson's lay-in pushed the edge to 52-26 with 7:41 remaining. Campbell reserves Jordan Faciane and Casey Perrin sank triples in the final 1:46 as 12 of the 14 Camels who played scored.
Monday's contest was Campbell's lone home game in a six-outing stretch. Those six games will be played in six different states (Ohio, Connecticut, Virginia, North Carolina, Delaware, South Carolina). The Camels play at Delaware State Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) and at the College of Charleston Sunday (2:00).
