ROCK HILL, S.C. – Joab Jerome and Keon Johnson led four players in double figures with 13 points apiece and Winthrop defeated Campbell 88-62 Saturday at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Larry Brown and Andre Smith added 12 points each for Winthrop (13-10, 6-4 Big South) which won its third-straight game by shooting 51 percent from the floor and finishing with a 41-27 edge on the boards.
The Eagles made 5 more free throws (25-36) than Campbell attempted (11-20) and outscored the Camels 42-24 in the paint.
Darius Leonard scored 15 points, Kyre' Hamer 14, Reco McCarter 12 and Luke Moyer 11 for Campbell (11-14, 5-5), which dropped its third in a row. McCarter grabbed 7 rebounds and Hamer had 6 boards and 5 steals in 31 minutes off the bench.
"Part of this is that we've got to get better as a group," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan. "Part of it is that we have to put this game behind us because we've proven that we're a good team. You have to have a short memory, but never forget how this felt."
Winthrop opened a double-digit lead thanks to a 20-4 run midway through the first half. After Leonard's 3 brought the Camels within 14-11 with 11:06 remaining, Keon Johnson knocked down a triple and Jarad Scott and Jerome added 3-point plays to start an 11-0 burst. Larry Brown's slam in transition gave the Eagles a 34-15 lead with 4:56 remaining.
Winthrop led 45-23 at half-time thanks to 55 percent shooting, 11 points off 8 Campbell turnovers and an 8-1 edge in second-chance points. Leonard made 5-of-7 shots (2-4 threes) in the first half and scored 12 points, but the rest of the team shot just 4-of-18 (.222).
Campbell finished the game shooting 44.9 percent (22-49) from the floor and making 7-of-24 threes (.292).
The Camels return home Wednesday to face Presbyterian (7:00 p.m.).
