BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Ted Nilsson defeated Dominik Kaniewski in a third-set tie-breaker and Coastal Carolina rallied for a 4-3 Big South Conference men's tennis victory over Campbell Tuesday at the Nisbet Center.
Campbell (9-5, 4-1) won the doubles point, but saw its six-match win streak halted when the Chanticleers (10-6, 2-1) claimed victories at the top four singles positions.
Philippe Tsangaridis ended Fernando Guillen's 10-match win streak at No.-1 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph, while Garik Yedigarian downed Marthinus Visser 6-4, 6-1 at No.-2.
Steven Billington and Adrien Rossignon provided the Camels with a pair of straight-sets wins at the sixth and fifth singles places, respectively.
However Leo Christofides overcame a one-set deficit to down Campbell's Rik van Gerwen 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 at number-four. Nilsson outlasted Kaniewski (6-3, 4-6, 7-6) by winning the decisive breaker 7-5 for Coastal, which ended a two-match losing streak.
In doubles play, Jean-Marc Krone and Visser improved to 10-2 on the spring, 4-1 against Big South opponents with an 8-7 victory over Nilsson and Hunter Whalen at the third doubles post. Guillen and van Gerwen also moved to 4-1 against league competition (9-3 overall) with an 8-5 triumph at the second spot over Yedigarian and Renan Samed.
Campbell hosts South Carolina State Thursday at 1 p.m., before returning to Big South action Saturday in a 12 noon start at UNC Asheville.
