Lady Camels fall 50-40 at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. - With the game tied at 36-36 with 10:53 remaining, Campbell (11-7, 6-3 BSC) was held scoreless for the next 10 minutes as Coastal Carolina (10-8, 4-5 BSC) claimed a 50-40 victory inside the HTC Center on Tuesday evening.

The Chanticleers held the Lady Camels to just two field goals over the last 10 minutes, both of which came in the final minute of the game.

Senior Kiera Gaines led Campbell with 12 points and also finished with 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Redshirt junior RaeChaun Edwards led all players with six assists.

As a team, Campbell was held to just 28.3 percent (17-of-60) shooting for the contest, while Coastal Carolina went 14-of-47 (29.8 percent) from the field.

Anna Vogt led all scorers with 13 points and added 11 rebounds for a double-double, and she was joined in double figures by Ced Gibson with 12 points.

The Lady Camels jumped out to an early lead by scoring the first six points of the game and 10 of the first 11 against the Chanticleers. Four different scorers found the basket for Campbell, led by Gaines with four points. A short jumper by senior Summer Leverette at the 12:51 mark off a feed from Gaines gave the Lady Camels an early 10-1 advantage.

Campbell would maintain a lead of five points or more for the next six minutes, but five unanswered points by Coastal Carolina over a two-minute span, punctuated by a jumper from Vogt with 6:44 remaining, cut the lead to just four, 17-13.

The Chanticleers grabbed their first lead of the contest with just over a minute remaining in the first half. In the midst of a 12-2 run over the final five minutes of the half, a layup by Vogt gave Coastal Carolina a 24-23 lead; 40 seconds later, Vogt connected on a free throw and Campbell entered the locker room trailing 25-23.

The first minute of the second half featured three lead changes between the two sides before the Lady Camels emerged with a three-point lead, 30-27, following a pair of Leverette free throws.

Campbell maintained its lead for the next six and a half minutes before four straight points from Coastal Carolina's Gibson gave the Chanticleers a 36-32 lead with 11:43 to play. Almost immediately, two straight buckets from Gaines and Leverette brought the score level at 36-36.

Over the next 10:03, Campbell was held scoreless while Coastal Carolina tallied 11 unanswered points to grab its biggest lead of the game. Junior Jessica Pone ended the run with a jumper with 50 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 47-38, but the Lady Camels were unable to get any closer as the clock ran out.

Campbell will be back in action for the second leg of its three-game road trip at Big South-leading Liberty on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The matchup is set to break a 13-13 deadlock in the all-time series between the two schools; Liberty holds an 8-4 record in matchups played on its home floor.
