BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Senior Summer Leverette netted 17 second-half points and fellow senior Kiera Gaines notched her fifth double-double of the season as Campbell (12-9, 7-5 BSC) defeated Longwood (3-18, 3-9 BSC) 68-56 inside Gore Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Camels remained undefeated in Big South play at home, moving to 5-0 on the season on their home court.
Leverette finished with a career-high 21 points to lead all scorers, and Gaines stuffed the stat sheet, totaling 11 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and a steal. In addition, with a block late in the first half, Gaines became the program's all-time leader in blocked shots with the 95th of her career; with two more in the second half, she finished the day with 97.
As a team, Campbell shot 22-of-53 (41.5 percent) from the field and knocked down 5-of-15 (33.3 percent) three-pointers. The Lady Camels were also 19-of-22 (86.4 percent) from the free-throw line, their best free-throw percentage of the season.
Raven Williams led the Lancers with 17 points and was joined in double figures by Kyndal Skersick with 15 and Deborah Headen with 11.
The Lancers were held to just 32.3 percent shooting (21-of-65) in the contest and were outrebounded by a 51-30 margin by the Lady Camels.
Campbell opened the game on a hot streak, scoring nine of the first 11 points to open up a 9-2 lead at the 14:22 mark. Gaines keyed the run with an opening three-pointer and had five points, while Coffer contributed four of her own for the Lady Camels.
Longwood answered with a 9-2 run of its own over the next three minutes. Headen scored four points to lead the run that was punctuated by Shannon Mosby's three-pointer that knotted the game at 11-11 with 11:40 remaining.
Continuing the trend of runs, the Lady Camels fired off a 10-2 spurt over the next three and a half minutes to jump out to a 21-13 advantage. Four different Campbell players scored during the run, led by four points from senior Juli Osborne, and sophomore Jessica Pone capped the run with a layup with 7:20 left on the clock.
Both sides played out the remainder of the half nearly basket-for-basket, and the Lady Camels carried a 34-26 lead into the halftime break.
The Lancers opened the second frame on an 8-3 run, cutting Campbell's lead to just five, 39-34, with 16:12 remaining. Skersick notched four points for Longwood to key the run, but Leverette put an end to the stretch on a three-pointer from the left side off a feed from Gaines.
Leverette's first three-pointer was the beginning of a three-strike barrage that spurred a 9-2 Campbell run. The Turkey, N.C., native knocked down three straight shots from beyond the arc, the last coming at 11:55 off another assist from Gaines, to give the Lady Camels a 48-36 lead over the Lancers.
Another 8-2 run for Longwood brought the Lancers within six, 50-44, after a Skersick free throw with 7:59 remaining, but Leverette remained hot and scored Campbell's next six points to maintain the lead.
Longwood closed to within six again, 62-56, with just over a minute remaining, but the Lady Camels scored the game's final six points to close out the victory.
Campbell will be back in action for its annual "Camels for a Cure" matchup on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. as the Lady Camels host Winthrop inside Gore Arena. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and free pink t-shirts will be available while supplies last. Donations will also be accepted, with all proceeds benefitting cancer research.
