LYNCHBURG, VA. – Liberty used a 23-2 run early in the second half to grab a lead it never relinquished and hand Campbell a 73-60 loss Tuesday night at the Vines Center.
The Flames (7-19, 1-12) ended a 12-game losing streak as Ryan Kemrite keyed the decisive burst with a trio of three-pointers and Campbell went 11:00 without a field goal.
After leading at half-time (36-32) for the sixth-straight game, the Camels (9-17, 3-10) missed 11 of their first 12 three-pointers of the second period and fell to 1-13 on the road.
Liberty shot 67 percent (12-18) from the field in the final period while the Camels made just 7-of-31 (.226) shots after leading 40-32 with 19:04 left in the contest.
David Andoh led the Flames with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Theo Johnson added 15 and 8. Kemrite chipped in 14, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
Kyre' Hamer topped the Camels with 16 points and 7 boards, Reco McCarter added 13 (10 in the first half) plus 5 assists. Andrew Ryan, who entered the game averaging 18.3 points over the last 4 games, finished with 9 on 3-of-10 shooting beyond the arc.
Hamer knocked down a triple to give the Camels a 40-32 edge with 19:04 to play. However, CU went 11 minutes without a bucket from the field and had five turnovers as the Flames built a 55-42 edge. CU pulled within 59-52 on Hamer's drive with 4:18 to go, but did not get any closer.
On the night, Liberty hit 55.8 percent (24-43) of its shots, 8-of-12 threes, and 17-of-25 (.680) from the stripe. Campbell made 20-of-57 shots (.351), 11-of-34 (.324) from 3-point distance, and 9-of-18 from the line (.500).
Campbell knocked down nine of 16 threes (.563) in the opening half and led 36-32 at the break. Six different Camels connected from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes.
Notes:
- Ryan (970) moved into 15th place on CU's career Division I era (since '77-78) scoring list and played in his school-record 123rd game.
- The Camels return home Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. Valentine's Day tip-off against High Point.
