BUIES CREEK, N.C. – John Brown scored 21 points and High Point rode a 15-0 run late in the game to deal Campbell a 63-51 Big South Conference loss Saturday at Gore Arena.
D.J. Mason's free throw capped an 18-5 run and gave the Camels a 42-40 lead with 8:39 to go. However, Campbell went scoreless over the next 6:45 against the league leaders. Brian Richardson had seven points in the key 15-0 spurt including drives to the bucket on consecutive possessions to give the Panthers their largest lead (55-42) with 2:14 remaining.
Brown made 9-of-13 from the floor and grabbed six rebounds for High Point (19-7, 10-4), which made all 16 of its free throws and finished with a 26-14 edge in points off turnovers. Richardson finished with 12 points for the Panthers, who shot just 40 percent from the floor and made 5-of-14 threes (.357).
Freshmen Curtis Phillips and Troy Harper led Campbell (9-18, 3-11) with 12 points each. The Camels hit 7-of-19 threes and 16-of-20 (.800) from the line, but shot just 35 percent (14-40) from the field and committed 19 turnovers while dropping their third-straight game.
"We hit a stretch in the second half where we were stuck on 42 (points) it seemed like forever," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan. "High Point got 14 offensive rebounds and we turned it over 19 times. That was the key. I was pleased with our defensive effort, but it's hard to fight back numerous times, especially in the second half."
Campbell rode a 13-2 burst to take its first lead (20-19) on Reco McCarter's spin move in the lane with 4:27 to play in the opening half. However, Lorenzo Cugini and Richardson hit back-to-back threes and the Panthers went into the dressing room with a 27-24 edge.
CU shot 37 percent in the opening period and made 4-of-6 threes, while the visitors made 39 percent of their shots, 3-of-6 beyond the arc. Brown scored 10 first-half points for High Point. Troy Harper led the Camels with 7 off the bench before the break.
