BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Seniors Reco McCarter (17) and Andrew Ryan (14) combined for 31 points in their final home game to lead Campbell to a 65-50 Big South win over Winthrop Thursday night at Gore Arena.
McCarter scored 13 of his game-high 17 in the second half and dealt six assists as Campbell (10-20, 4-13 Big South) ended a five-game losing streak. Ryan canned 4-of-8 threes and pulled down seven rebounds.
Sophomore Quinton Ray came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while adding four assists. Freshman Curtis Phillips added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Camels, who shot 49 percent (22-45) from the floor and finished with a 37-28 edge on the boards.
Keon Moore led Winthrop (16-12, 11-6) 16 points, but made only 1-of-8 threes after entering the nation ranked sixth in the country in triples per game (3.33) and fifth in 3-point accuracy (.457). Xavier Cooks added 13 points for the Eagles, who saw their three-game win streak end. Andre Smith, who had 23 points in last month's Winthrop victory over the Camels at Rock Hill, S.C., finished with four points on 1-of-7 shooting.
Ray scored a season-high seven points in the opening half alone and Ryan canned a trio of threes for the Camels, who led 30-25 at the break. McCarter knocked down a pair of long threes in Campbell's first two possessions of the second period.
Winthrop, which hit only 31 percent of its shots in the final period, never drew closer than nine in the last 13 minutes. The Camel lead reached as many as 19 points down the stretch and McCarter final field goal in the building came on a 360-degree slam dunk with 1:12 remaining.
Both Campbell and Winthrop entered the game ranked among the nation's top 35 in three-pointers made at better than eight per outing. However, the Eagles hit just 2-of-17 beyond the arc (11.8 percent) and missed all nine of their second-half attempts.
Campbell knocked down 8-of-22 triples (.364), 4-of-10 in the final period, and made more free throws (13-of-20) than Winthrop attempted (8-of-12).
