Camels down both teams in day one of Dolphin Classic

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - On Friday of the Dolphin Classic hosted by Jacksonville University, the Camels defeated both the Cleveland State Vikings, 8-4, and the Abilene Christian Wildcats, 3-1.

After an early two-run home run in the first inning from Viking's Erica McNew, the Vikings found themselves ahead by two runs. During the next inning, the Vikings were able to add on two more runs as the Camels found themselves down in a four-run shortfall.

However, both Bailey Bjorson and senior Ericka Nesbitt were able to single and steal bases during the bottom of the third to get things going for the Camels. Senior Stephanie Jones was able to follow it up with a single herself to put two runs on the board after a Cleveland State error. Freshman Chandler Patterson then smashed a double right up the middle, and the Camels found themselves training by only one run.

It would be Bjorson again who hit a double to score Camise Patterson, typing up the contest. After taking a 4-0 lead to begin the game, the Vikings would not score another run.

The Camels would go on to score three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning highlighted by a triple from short stop, Nesbitt.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Baker picked up her fifth win, and pitched a complete game with four runs, four hits, six strikeouts, and three walked batters.

For the Vikings, Alex Radjen suffered the loss, giving up 10 hits, seven runs, and committing six errors through four innings.

The Camels will take on the Abilene Christian Wildcats for its second game of the day in the Dolphin Classic at 12:30 p.m.

Game Two

The second game of the day against the Abilene Christian Wildcats would result in the same outcome with a Camels 3-1 win, as senior Julia Callicutt struck out 11 batters in a pitcher's duel.

The Wildcats struck first when Peyton Hedrick scored on a passed ball from Julia Callicutt to Bjorson. After that however; Callicutt limited the Vikings to only three more hits, and finished the day with 4 hits and only one run with five walks through seven innings.

The Camels scoring plays came during the third inning when singles from singles from Melissa Tullar and Kerstine Womack scored Nesbitt and Chandler Patterson.

All would stay silent for the rest of the game until Brittany Bruce hit a double to score Camise Patterson for the Camels third run.

The Wildcats Emily Seidel took the loss for Abilene Christian, pitching a complete game and allowed 11 hits, three runs, had three errors, and struck out five batters.

The Camels resume play on Saturday at 4:30 when they take on Cleveland State for the second time.
