BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell batters rapped 19 hits and Camel pitchers allowed only one run Wednesday in a softball doubleheader sweep of visiting Appalachian State at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
The Camels (18-13) won the opener 5-1 behind Katie Baker's complete-game effort. CU took the nightcap 5-0 on the strength of Julia Callicutt's first shutout of the season.
Appalachian State (9-18) managed just six hits over 14 innings. The Mountaineers, who have dropped five-straight games, have lost 11 of their last 12.
In the opener, Campbell jumped in front in the first when Ericka Nesbitt reached on a bunt single and eventually scored on Stephanie Jones' ground out. Melissa Tuller's RBI hit and Lia Batchelor's RBI double tacked on two more in the Campbell third.
CU added an unearned run in the fourth and tacked on another in the fifth, when Kerstine Womack singled, stole second and later scored on Tuller's ground out.
Baker held ASU hitless until Caroline Rogers reached on a one-out single in the fifth. She lost her shutout bid when Caroline Chambers homered to lead off the seventh. However, Baker retired the next two batters on strikeouts before getting a game-ending groundout.
The sophomore right-hander improved to 9-8 on the year by scattering three hits and two walks while striking out eight in a complete-game effort.
Appalachian starter Alissa Schoelkopf (2-5) took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in two and 2/3 innings.
Womack and Baker finished with two hits each for the Camels, while Tullar drove in a pair. Eight of the nine players in the Camel starting batting order had at least one hit.
Campbell opened the second contest with back-to-back hits by Jones and Nesbitt. After Tullar's sac bunt and a walk to Chandler Patterson, Jones scored on Womack's hit up the middle.
In the fourth, Chandler Patterson walked, then pinch-runner Tori Griffin stole second and moved on third on Camise Patterson's single to left. Griffin then scored on an error to double the lead.
Campbell left the bases full without scoring in the fifth, but plated three insurance runs in the sixth. Jones and Nesbitt produced two-out, run-scoring doubles. Nesbitt then moved to third and scored on wild pitches.
Nesbitt finished the nightcap 3-of-4 and raised her Big South Conference-leading batting average to .472. Jones also had two hits for the fourth-straight game and extended her hitting streak to seven outings while raising her average to .381.
Chambers had a pair of singles in the nightcap and finished the twinbill with half of Appalachian's six hits.
Callicutt (8-3) earned her first shutout since Apr. 16, 2013 by scattering three singles and two walks while striking out four. Katherine Johnson (3-7) allowed just one earned run on six hits over four and 1/3 frames, but took the loss for the Mountaineers.
The Camels continue their 13-game home stand Friday with a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader against Liberty.
