Camels fall 13-11 at Fresno State in first road contest of the season

FRESNO, Calif. - Campbell pulled within one goal, 12-11, after an Erica Hitch goal with 7:22 to play, but the Camels full just short in the first game of their West Coast road trip, falling 13-11 at Fresno State on Wednesday evening.

Hitch tied with Fresno State's Kyleigh Westgarth with a game-high five goals, Kayla Reilly added a hat trick, Loren Day finished with a pair of scores and Grace Boyce tallied her first goal of the season for the Camels (1-4). Day also led the squad with a game-high seven draw controls.

In goal, Merredith Bechler posted her second game this season with 10 or more saves, making 11 stops while playing the full 60 minutes between the pipes.

For Fresno State (2-3), Westgarth led the way with five goals and Caroline Dineen-Carlson added four of her own. Natalie Chaffin drew the start and played the full 60 minutes in goal, making seven saves while surrendering all 11 Campbell goals.

After exchanging the first two goals, the Camels fell into an early hole midway through the first half after three unanswered scores by Fresno State. Dineen-Carlson netted two of the scores while Westgarth fired the third to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead with 11:57 remaining in the half.

Campbell rallied back, however, sparked by two goals from Hitch just 24 seconds apart. Kayla Reilly added an unassisted strike less than one minute later, and Day completed the quick burst with a free position goal to put the Camels on top, 5-4, at the 8:36 mark.

Fresno State finished the first half with a pair of goals, leaving Campbell down 6-5 heading into the locker room.

The Camels pulled even once again on another unassisted Hitch goal 40 seconds into the second frame, but the Bulldogs responded with three unanswered goals over the next nine minutes to grab a 9-6 advantage with just over 20 minutes to play.

Campbell pulled within one goal on two occasions down the stretch, first on Day's goal off a feed from Hitch that cut Fresno State's lead to 10-9 with 15:42 on the clock and again as Kayla Reilly assisted Hitch's strike at 7:22 to make it 12-11, but the Camels could not complete the comeback as Westgarth added an insurance goal with 3:38 to play.

The Camels will remain in Fresno for the second game of their West Coast trip as they face San Diego State on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. ET in a neutral-site clash. The meeting will be the first in program history between Campbell and the Aztecs.
