Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell rallied from a 16-7 deficit midway through the second half, scoring seven straight goals, but fell just short in a 17-14 setback against Coastal Carolina in the regular season finale for both teams on Friday evening.
Annie Cook matched season highs with four goals and seven points for the Camels (5-12, 2-5) and either scored or assisted on four of the seven goals during Campbell's second-half rally. Kayla Reilly and Kaki Armiger each finished with three goals, while Erica Hitch fired a pair for the Camels.
Defensively, Erin O'Hara forced four turnovers for the Campbell on the evening, and Hitch, Jillian Summers and April Reinhart each added a pair. Hitch led all Camels with six ground balls, and Cook and O'Hara scooped up four each.
In goal, Merredith Bechler played the full 60 minutes and recorded her sixth game this season with double-digit saves after making 10 stops.
For the Chanticleers (10-5, 5-2), Jen Cosgrove led all scorers with seven goals, and Maggie Carr notched a pair of assists on the offensive end. Defensively, Maddy Ciardi forced three turnovers, while Keri White controlled four draws.
Jenna Stover played the full game in net for the Chanticleers, making 11 saves.
Campbell jumped out to an early lead with an unassisted strike from Loren Day just 53 seconds into the contest, but three straight goals from Coastal Carolina, including two off the stick of Haley Kyger, pushed the Chanticleers to a 3-1 lead.
Armiger and Kayla Reilly pulled the Camels level with a pair of goals over the next seven minutes, but a 5-0 Coastal Carolina run built an 8-3 advantage for the Chanticleers with 5:46 to play in the opening half.
Campbell battled back from the five-goal differential by scoring the final four goals of the opening frame, pulling to within one goal, 8-7, heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, Coastal Carolina used an 8-0 run over the opening 10 minutes to build a 16-7 lead with 20:22 to play. Cosgrove scored six of the Chanticleers' goals during the stretch and assisted on another for seven of her eight points.
Rebecca Sheinfeld's strike 40 seconds later ended the run and sparked a 7-0 Campbell rally over the next 11 minutes. Armiger and Cook each found the back of the net twice during the run, punctuated by Armiger's goal with 8:24 to play that cut Coastal Carolina's lead to 16-14.
Despite the late push, Campbell fell just short as Courntey Genovese scored for the Chanticleers with 2:32 remaining to reach the final 17-14 scoreline.
Campbell earned the No. 6 seed in the Big South Tournament for the second straight season and will travel to Conway, S.C., for a rematch against the No. 3 seed Chanticleers on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Big South Quarterfinals.
