RANCHO MIRAGE, CALIF. – Former Campbell standout Michelle Koh was one of 60 golfers to make it through the first stage of LPGA Tour qualifying last weekend.
The native of Kuantan, Malaysia tied for seventh in the 283-player field at 4-under-par 284 (69-68-73-74) on the par-72, Mission Hills Country Club - Palmer and Dinah Shore Course.
Four-time Camel all-conference performer Lisbeth Brooks (2012-15) tied for 128th (76-75-74-78—303).
Koh will move on to the second stage qualifier Oct. 22-25 at the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla.
The top 80 qualifiers from the stage II event will then move to the third stage, Dec. 2-6 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
At the conclusion of the Stage III tournament, the top finishers will receive LPGA membership and all other players who complete a minimum of 72 holes in the 90-hole competition, will earn Symetra Tour status for 2016. Category status and the number of membership cards will be determined by the LPGA prior to the stage III competition.
Bertine Strauss won the Stage I qualifier at 14-under (67-67-70-70—274), one stroke ahead of Megan Khang (69-65-72-69—275).
An All-Big South Conference and all-region performer as a senior at Campbell, Koh tied for 10th place in the 2012 NCAA East Regional. In three trips to LPGA International during her four-year collegiate career, Koh had a pair of top-15 individual finishes, plus a runner-up showing in the 2011 LPGA International Xavier Invitational.
Earlier this summer, Koh won for the first time as a professional at the CTBC Shanghai Ladies Classic at the Tianma Country Club in China. She finished 12th at the Australian Ladies Masters in February.
Notes: Two-time Big South player of the year Kaylin Yost (2010-14) is in her first year on the Symetra Tour, the LPGA developmental tour. She stands 146th on the Symetra Tour money list in 10 events heading into this week's event - the W.B. Mason Championship at Thorny Lea Golf Club in Brockton, Mass. Former Camel standout Sandra Angulo (2007-11) is also playing on the Symetra Tour.
