Radford holds on for 78-66 win over Campbell

RADFORD, VA. – Cameron Jones scored a career-high 35 points and Radford held off a second-half Campbell rally to defeat the Camels 78-66 Wednesday night at the Dedmon Center.

The Highlanders (11-9, 4-4 Big South) hit their first five shots of the second half and led 53-29 with 16:16 to go.  However, Campbell (8-11, 2-7) outscored the hosts 28-10 over the next 10:01 and trimmed the gap to 63-57 after Chris Clemons hit a three with 6:15 to go.

The Camels had the chance to cut further into the lead, but Jones stole the ball and laid it in, the followed with a pull-up three and the Radford lead once again was double digits (68-57) with 5:05 to go.  The Camels were unable to get within single numbers the rest of the way.

Jones finished 12-of-19 from the field, 6-of-9 beyond the arc, and hit all five from the line to lead Radford.  Ed Polite Jr. added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Rashun Davis had 10 points and six assists for Radford, which improved to 8-1 following losses this year.

Clemons led the Camels with 25 points, including 5-of-10 from long range, for his seventh 25-plus point outing of the season.  Troy Harper added 16 on 6-of-9 shooting for the Camels, who made 53 percent from the floor in the second half, but dropped their sixth outing in a row.

Radford shot 55 percent from the field, made 9-of-14 threes and 9-of-13 from the line.  Campbell finished the evening 27-of-63 (.429) from the field, hit 8-of-16 from three-point territory and 4-of-4 from the stripe.

Jones scored 19 points in the first half, hitting 5-of-6 threes including one at the horn to give the Highlanders a 40-25 lead at the break.

Campbell endured a 7:48 drought, missing 12-straight shots after Clemons had brought the Camels within 25-20 with 9:12 left in the opening period.  Radford scored 12 unanswered points before Clemons broke the scoreless span with a trey from the key with 1:24 to play.

Radford hit 53 percent (16-30) of its first-half shots, including 7-of-9 treys.  Campbell made 11-of-33 from the field (3-of-6 from the arc) in the opening half. 

The Camels return to action in a week when they host pre-season Big South favorite High Point next Wed. (Jan. 27) at 7:00 p.m.
