CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Charleston Southern used a 9-0 run midway through the fourth period to help claim a 65-57 victory over Campbell Tuesday night at the Buc Dome. RaeChaun Edwards led the Lady Camels (7-12, 2-8 BSC) with 14 points.
Sarah Smith pulled down a career-high seven rebounds to lead Campbell on the boards. Amanda Coffer tallied 10 points, but the Lady Camels' leading scorer played in a season-low 15 minutes due to foul trouble and fouled out with three minutes to play. Summer Price and Qua Brown each tallied seven points and six rebounds off the bench. Brown's rebound tally was also a career-high.
An Alyssa Mann three-pointer gave Charleston Southern (9-10, 4-6) its first lead since early in the third period at 47-46 with 9:13 to play in the game. The lead changed hands four times over the next two minutes as CU held a narrow 51-50 advantage with 7:04 on the clock.
The Bucs scored the next nine points to take a 59-51 lead with 2:32 left in the contest. An Edwards' layup broke a nearly six minute scoring drought as the Lady Camels trailed by six with 1:09 to play. CU was forced to foul in the final minute to try and cut into the Buccaneer lead, but CSU hit three free throws to ice away the victory.
Charleston Southern was led by Mann, who had a game-high 20 points with five three pointers. Ke'Asia Jackson tallied 14 points and Monique Maximilien added 10 and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
The Bucs things going quickly, hitting their first four shots of the game and jumping out to an early 8-0 lead three minutes into the contest. Facing an 11-2 deficit, the Lady Camels used a 7-0 run to cut the advantage to 11-9. A few minutes later, a Price trey tied the game at 14-14 with just under three minutes to play in the opening frame.
A nice hustle play for Smith earned an easy layup on an offensive rebound to cut the CSU lead to 17-16 with 34 seconds to play in the first. Following a pair of Buccaneer free throws, Brown hit a layup just before the first period buzzer to cut the CSU advantage to 19-18 after the opening period. Each team shot over 50 percent in the first.
Campbell scored the first four points of the second period and took its first lead of the game on another Brown layup in the opening possession of the frame. Later, with the game knotted at 27, the Buccaneers reeled off eight straight points to take a 35-27 lead with 2:45 remaining in the second.
Back-to-back buckets for Brown and Edwards cut the lead in half with 42 seconds to play in the first half. Jackson hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds on the clock to send the Bucs to the halftime locker room with a 37-31 advantage. The Lady Camels were plagued with six turnovers in the second period.
Campbell came out firing in the third period, scoring the first eight points and taking a 39-37 lead with 7:54 to play. CU broke a 39-39 tie with a quick 4-0 spurt but Coffer was whistled for her fourth foul with 5:38 to play in the third with CU leading 43-39.
In a game littered with fouls, each side hit six free throws over the next four minutes as the Lady Camels held a 45-43 advantage with 1:48 on the clock in the third. Campbell's Tiffany Daniel hit the first field goal for either side in nearly six minutes with just under a minute to go before the fourth.
Jackson hit just the Bucs' second field goal of the third period with nine seconds to play to trim the Lady Camel advantage to 47-45 heading to the final frame.
Campbell out-shot Charleston Southern 43.1 percent to 37.3 and outrebounded CSU 42-37. However, the Buccaneers doubled-up the Lady Camels 40-20 in points in the paint and forced 21 turnovers while committing just eight.
Campbell will return home to Gore Arena on Saturday to take on Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m. The Lady Camels defeated the Chanticleers 83-70 back in December.
