CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina broke open a tight game early in the second half and went on to defeat Campbell 97-68 Saturday at The HTC Center.
Shane Whitfield scored on Campbell's first possession of the final half to knot the score at 30. Coastal then outscored the Camels 38-7 over the next 10 minutes. Elijah Wilson's three capped a 22-2 run within that flurry and put the Chants in front 68-37 with 9:31 to play.
Kyre' Hamer scored 15 points, Chris Clemons 14 and Rod Days a season-high 13 for Campbell (8-13, 2-9), which lost its eighth-straight game.
Coastal Carolina (13-8, 7-4) shot 74 percent (20-27) in the second half and made 7-of-11 threes after the break. The Chanticleers finished with a 42-30 edge on the boards and a 23-11 advantage in second-chance points.
On the day, Coastal hit 59 percent from the floor and made 9-of-21 triples. Campbell shot 36 percent for the game and connected on 6-of-27 three-pointers.
Wilson led five Chanticleers in double figures with 21 points, plus eight rebounds. Jaylen Shaw added 17 points, Badou Diagne 14, Colton Ray-St Cyr 13 and Shivaughn Wiggins 10.
Coastal jumped to an 18-8 lead in the first 7:12 thanks to a 12-0 run capped by Ron Trapps' basket. However, the Camels answered with a 9-0 spurt as Clemons scored 7 in the burst.
Ray-St Cyr's drive with 4:02 left put the Chants ahead 27-20, but Days scored all eight of CU's points in an 8-2 flurry and CU trailed 30-28 at the break.
Campbell shot just 34 percent and made just 3-of-16 (.188) threes in the first half. However, CU committed just one turnover and had an 8-1 edge in points off miscues during the first stanza. Days led the Camels with 8 first-half points, while Clemons had 7.
The Camels travel to Longwood Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. start.
