Second half surge lifts Marist over Camels 24-7

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist posted 24 unanswered points, including 21 in the second half to down visiting Campbell 24-7 Saturday at Tenney Stadium in its Pioneer Football League road opener.

Marist (1-3, 1-0 PFL) posted 184 second half yards, but reached the endzone three times in six possessions to hand Campbell (3-2, 1-1 PFL) its first loss in conference play.

Trailing 7-3 at halftime, redshirt sophomore quarterback Mike White orchestrated scoring drives on the Red Foxes' first two drives of the third quarter. White tossed a three yard touchdown pass to Joe Jordan on Marist's opening drive of the half, finishing off a 10 play, 67 yard march.

After forcing a Campbell three and out, Marist followed with a 13 play, 56 yard scoring drive, this time with Marcellus Calhoun capping it off with a one yard TD run.

Marist added a score with 2:13 left in the game, with Calhoun punching in a two yard score to go ahead 24-7.

White led Marist with 233 yards on 19-of-37 passing with a touchdown and an interception. He added 49 yards on the ground in the win, while Calhoun posted 46 rushing yards and two touchdowns, also hauling in three passes for 67 yards.

Campbell redshirt freshman quarterback Elijah Burress tallied a season-best 142 yards rushing on 22 carries, adding 130 yards on 8-of-26 passing with two interceptions.

De'Shawn Jones ran for 63 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown, while Aaron Blockmon picked up 76 yards on three catches.

Jones' first half score marked his 19th career rushing touchdown, setting a Campbell record. The TD broke Dakota Wolf's (2010-14) previous mark of 18.

Brandon Miller led Marist with 10 tackles, while Carlos Merritt and Scott Miller totaled seven apiece for the Camels. Chris Beaty added an interception for Campbell, his second of the season.

Campbell took a 7-3 lead into the break, outgaining the Red Foxes 300-144 in total yards in the opening half. The Camels ran for 219 yards in the first half alone, paced by 112 from Burress.

CU moved into Marist territory in five of its seven first half possessions. CU was stopped on downs on its opening drive, and a Burress pass was tipped at the line and intercepted later in the first quarter before De'Shawn Jones put Campbell on the board.

Mike Maccarone hit a 28 yard field goal for Marist before the break.

Campbell continues PFL play on the road, heading to Jacksonville on Oct. 8. The Camels and Dolphins will kick off at 7 p.m. in Jacksonville, Fla. Campbell returns home on Oct. 22, hosting Stetson (4 p.m.) for Homecoming.
