CLINTON, S.C. – A balanced offense and opportunistic defense led Campbell to its largest margin of victory in a Big South road game since re-joining the conference in 2011-12.  The Camels shot 58 percent from the floor and finished with a 36-6 advantage in points off turnovers in a 91-61 win over Presbyterian Saturday night at the Templeton Center.

Campbell (10-15, 4-11) won its second-straight game, extended an 11-point halftime lead to as many as 32, thanks to a 23-3 run in the final period.  Chris Clemons (4-6 threes) and Troy Harper led the Camels with 18 points; D.J. Mason added 11 plus 7 rebounds and 3 assists in 19 minutes off the bench.  Eleven of the 13 CU players in uniform scored, including reserves Nick Parker, Jon Ander Cuadra and Casey Perrin.

Quinton Ray added a season-high 8 points, Rod Days had 8, and Kyre' Hamer and Clemons dealt four assists each.  Parker scored five points in three minutes to celebrate his 20th birthday.

DeSean Murray scored a game-high 20 points to lead Presbyterian (8-17, 3-11), which dropped its seventh-straight outing.  However, the league's second-leading scorer had only two points in the final half due to foul trouble and finished with seven of the team's 19 turnovers.  Ruben Arroyo and Reggie Dillard added 12 points each for the Blue Hose, who shot 54.8 percent from the floor, but hit just 3-of-10 beyond the arc and only 12-of-21 (.571) from the line.

After dropping four of their previous six losses by four, or fewer, points, Presbyterian could not contain a Camel attack that made 60 percent (18-30) of its shots in the final period and assisted on 12 of its 18 field goals.

The Camels produced the team's highest-scoring half since a 54-point final period Dec. 31 at Winthrop to take a 47-36 lead at the break.  Ray's drive to the bucket with 17:23 to play started the 23-3 burst.  Mason's dunk with 8:56 to play capped the burst and pushed the margin to 75-43 as CU hit 12 of its first 17 shots in the final period and PC committed eight turnovers in the same span.

CU's 32-point advantage marked its largest lead against a Division I foe this year.

The Camels led by 25 when head coach Kevin McGeehan emptied his bench with 2:33 to play and CU's reserved outscored the Blue Hose 10-5 the rest of the way.

"It's nice to see the strengths and pillars of our program – unselfish play, sharing the ball and working for each other – so visible tonight," said McGeehan.  "From the start, our energy was at a high level. This isn't the easiest place to play, but our guys created the energy that transferred throughout the team."

Murray, who had 24 points and 13 rebounds in last month's 70-63 PC win at Campbell, made 8-of-9 first-half shots Saturday night, but hit just one shot while committing four turnovers in the second period.  In CU's 89-85 OT win over Gardner-Webb Thursday, Bulldog forward Tyrell Nelson – the league's leading rebounder – was limited to six points and one rebound in 19 minutes before fouling out.

"Tonight was the second-straight game where we put their best player in foul trouble, and that changes their team," said McGeehan.  "When we are playing together and have that mindset, we can be really tough to guard."

Neither team led by more than five points for the first 16:00 until Clemons went on a personal 11-0 run.  The freshman guard scored all 13 of his points in the final 3:20 of the opening half and CU led 47-36 at the break.

Led by Murray's 18 first-half points on 8-of-9 shooting, Presbyterian made 60 percent of its shots in the first period. However, the sophomore forward went to the bench with his second foul with 4:38 to play, just before Clemons' burst. The Blue Hose also committed seven first-half turnovers that the Camels converted into 15 points.

Campbell shot 56 percent in the opening stanza, hit 7-of-11 threes and 12-of-14 from the stripe.  Harper added 12 points, including a pair of threes. CU's 47-point outburst was its highest scoring half since a 54-point second period Dec. 31 in a 90-83 win at Winthrop.

Notable:

  • With 456 points in 25 games, Clemons is already 2nd on CU's Division I era freshman scoring list.  He moved into 7th place on the Big South freshman scoring charts and enters next week just four points out of sixth.
  • Campbell's bench has outscored its opponents by a 128-56 margin over the last four games, including a 33-12 gap Saturday.
  • The Camels improved to 3-1 all-time at Presbyterian's Templeton Center.
  • Campbell returns home to take on NAIA member Allen University Tuesday at 8 p.m.
