BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- 12 Campbell players finished in the scoring column and the Lady Camels trailed for just 53 seconds in a 69-56 victory over Winthrop on Tuesday night at Gore Arena. Summer Price led all scorers with 18 points as CU (10-14, 5-10 BSC) claimed its second-straight victory.
Price hit 8-of-12 shots and 14 points came in the first half. Amanda Coffer finished with 13 points and five blocks, one shy of her career high set last game against Longwood. Jessica Pone added 11 points with a career-high five field goals while RaeChaun Edwards matched her season-high of 10 assists for the third time this season. Qua Brown pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, which was also a season-high.
An 8-0 run for Campbell between the end of the third period and the start of the fourth turned a 10-point advantage to 18 (62-44) with eight minutes to play in the game. Winthrop (4-20, 3-12) went eight minutes without a field goal during that stretch as an Aliyah Kilpatrick layup cut the CU lead 66-50 with 5:38 on the clock.
The Eagles were only able to get back with 14 of the lead before a pair of late free throws trimmed the Lady Camels' winning margin to 13. Campbell received contributions off the bench from Alyshia Allison, Hannah Long, Brianna Cribb, Jewell Yarborough and Caroline Bowns in the final frame.
Kilpatrick led three Winthrop players in double-figures with a 14 points. Niama Jackson and CiiCii Buford each scored 13 points while Kayla Atkins pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and scored seven points. The Eagles were plagued by 16 turnovers which resulted in 19 Campbell points and shot just 35.2 percent from the field.
Campbell dominated the paint, out-scoring Winthrop 44-12 down low. CU held a slight 38-37 rebounding advantage but shot 48.3 percent from the field and held a 16-4 advantage in fast break points.
After the Eagles put the first three points on the board, the Lady Camels responded with a 10-0 spurt to take a 13-3 advantage with 3:18 to play in the opening frame. An Arianne Whitaker jumper broke a seven minute scoring drought for Winthrop and kicked off a 6-0 Eagle run to cut the deficit to 13-9 with just under a minute to play in the first. Each side traded baskets in the final 30 seconds as CU held a 15-11 lead after the opening period.
A 5-0 run early in the second period pushed the Lady Camels' advantage back to nine, and a Bria Emanuel layup a few minutes later gave CU a 32-19 lead with 4:05 on the clock. A trey by Buford cut the lead back to 10 but a three by Price pushed the Campbell advantage to the largest of the half at 39-24 with just under two minutes remaining.
Winthrop answered with the next five points, but a layup by Pone with 11 seconds to play in the half sent Campbell to the break with a 41-29 advantage. CU shot a game-high 64.7 percent from the floor in the second stanza (11-for-17) including a pair of threes.
After back-to-back baskets by the Eagles to open the third period, an Edwards layup quickly pushed the Lady Camel lead back to double-digits. Coffer took over and scored seven-straight points for CU in the third as the lead stood at 52-39 with 4:08 on the clock.
A Whitaker free throw cut the deficit to 54-44 with 50 seconds left in the period. A pair of free throws for Edwards and a layup for Price at the buzzer sent the Lady Camels to the fourth period with a 58-44 advantage.
The Lady Camels will return to action this Saturday in Clinton, South Carolina against Presbyterian. CU will be looking to earn a split in the season series after falling to PC back in January.
