LAS CRUCES, N.M. – At day two of the Troy Cox Classic, Campbell dropped both contests on the day. An 11-3 loss in the first game against Creighton and in game two New Mexico State, Campbell fell 10-1 in five innings.
Game 1: Campbell 3, Creighton 11
Rachel McCollum registered a two-run homerun in the first inning, giving Campbell the opening lead, 2-0. Creighton battled back though, scoring 11 runs in the final four innings to record the 11-3.
With Amber Schisler on third base and two outs, McCollum registered her first homerun of her Campbell career. McCollum also drew two walks during the contest. Campbell scored its third run in the bottom of the sixth as Melissa Tullar singled to centerfield, scoring Cierra Harris from second base.
Jen Daro notched her first homerun of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth, scoring Creighton's first runs of the game. The Blue Jays added two more runs in the top of the fifth and three in the top of the six before Tullar's RBI single for Campbell. Trailing 8-3 into the top of the 7th, the Blue Jays scored three more runs, extending its lead to eight, solidifying the 11-3 victory for Creighton.
Taesha DuBoise went 3-for-4 at the plate for Campbell and now has five hits on the weekend. Katie Baker picked up the loss for the Fighting Camels in 4.2 innings of work, yielding three hits and three earned runs. Michal Hylton notched the win for the Blue Jays.
Game 2: Campbell 1, New Mexico State 10
A wild pitch in the fourth inning scored Herring for Campbell's lone run of the game, as New Mexico State plated 10 runs to clinch the victory after five innings.
Herring notched one of the four hits by the Fighting Camels during the day, one of two doubles during the day. Chandler Patterson went 1-for-2 as well with the other two-bag hit for Campbell.
New Mexico State scored in each inning they were at-bat during the contest, including seven runs in the first two innings. Holding a four-run advantage, Emma Adams (1-for-2) hit a two-run homerun, extending the Aggies lead to 6-0. The next batter, Kelsey Horton, added a solo homerun to extend the second inning lead to 7-0.
Campbell yielded another run in the third inning before putting one run on the board in the top of the fourth. The Aggies added two more in the bottom of the fourth, extending past the eight-run rule, which applies after the fifth inning.
Campbell softball returns to the diamond, Wednesday Feb. 24 at 3:30 p.m. against Elon inside Amanda Littlejohn Stadium in Buies Creek.
