BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Adam Wyse drove in three, eight Camels notched hits, and Campbell topped visiting Minnesota 11-7 in Friday's series opener at Jim Perry Stadium.
Campbell (3-2) collected 15 hits, a season-high and its most since putting up 17 in a win over Coastal Carolina on May 14, 2015. Minnesota (3-2) also posted 15 hits in the loss, including five in a four-run ninth.
CU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a RBI single from Brian Taylor and a two-out, two-run double from Matt Parrish.
After scratching one across in the third, Minnesota tied it up in the fourth on a bases loaded walk and a Jordan Smith RBI groundout.
Going in order in the fourth and fifth, Campbell rallied in the sixth with Wyse's two-run triple with two out breaking the stalemate.
Campbell tacked on with three-run seventh and eighth innings, with Drew Butler and Jimmy Monaghan's two-RBI singles, extending the lead to 11-3 before the Gophers' four-run ninth.
Campbell starter Nick Thayer (2-0) allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk in the win. Erik Dowse followed with two scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out four.
Wes Noble allowed four runs on five hits in the ninth, fanning two to close out the game.
Matt Fiedler (1-1) took the loss for Minnesota, surrendering five runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts and a walk in 5 1/3. Toby Anderson came on in relief, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Wyse went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI in the win, while Ben Calvano tallied a 3-for-5 effort with two runs. Monaghan, Parrish and Butler all knocked in two for the Camels, while JD Andreessen and Anthony Lopez scored twice.
Fiedler also paced Minnesota at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs. Connor Schaefbauer and Jordan Smith both drove in a pair in the loss.
The series continues tomorrow with a 3 p.m. start, with the finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
