Minnesota tops Camels 3-1 Saturday, evens series

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Terrin Vavra went 4-for-5 and Minnesota evened its series against Campbell with a 3-1 win Saturday at Jim Perry Stadium.

Minnesota moved to 4-2 overall with the win, while Campbell dipped to 3-3. Campbell took Friday's series opener 11-7, pounding out 15 hits. The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.

Dalton Sawyer (2-0) earned the win, tossing 6 1/3 innings with a run on seven hits, striking out five and walking two. Fred Manke picked up the save, tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings with a hit, three strikeouts and a walk.

Grant Yost (1-1) was charged with the loss, allowing two unearned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and a walk in 5 2/3.

Zack Minnick took the mound with two away and the bases loaded in the sixth and induced a groundout to second to end the inning and keep the Camels within a run at 2-1. Minnick pitched the final 3 1/3, allowing a run on three hits with a punchout and two walks.

Campbell held a 1-0 lead after Brian Taylor's RBI infield hit in the third, scoring Anthony Lopez, who reached on a triple into the gap in right-center.

Minnesota evened the score in the fourth on Connor Schaefbauer's sacrifice fly, scoring Micah Coffey, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.

The Gophers added an unearned run in the fifth when Matt Fiedler's sacrifice fly scored Dan Motl, who moved into scoring position on the Camels' second miscue of the game.

Coffey tacked on a RBI fielder's choice in the seventh to give Minnesota the 3-1 advantage.

Lopez doubled and tripled in the loss, going 2-for-4. Minnick also recorded a 2-for-4 effort for the Camels.
