MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Campbell softball captured a pair of wins on day two of the Wyndham Garden Cougar Classic. In game one, the Fighting Camels defeated UMass-Lowell 6-1 and in game two they defeated Detroit 11-9 in eight innings.
Game 1: Campbell 6, UMass-Lowell 1
Campbell softball earned its second win on the season with a 6-1 victory against UMass-Lowell Saturday morning.
UMass-Lowell added its lone run in the top of the first inning as Alisha Welch drove in Tori Alcorn with a single to centerfield. Campbell answered back with four runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Madison Herring began the scoring with a two-out solo home run, the first home run of her career. Two batters later, Jessica Anderson notched a double down the left field line that scored Lizabeth McCurry from third base. Bailey Bjorson then connected on a single to center field that scored a pair of runs, propelling Campbell to a 4-1 lead.
The Fighting Camels scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as well. Melissa Tullar reached base courtesy of a fielder's choice, which scored Madison Casto from third base. The next batter, Rachel McCollum, flied out to centerfield that allowed Karsen Leonhardt to advance home.
Courtney Roberts picked up the victory for Campbell as she pitched 6.0 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run and striking out five batters. Lauren Ramirez took the loss in six innings of work for UMass-Lowell.
Game 2: Campbell 11, Detroit 9 (F/8)
Campbell scored twice in the eighth inning and held off Detroit to earn its second victory of the day and third on the season. Both teams scored runs from the fifth inning on, including two consecutive ties before the Camels added two runs in the eighth for the win.
For the second consecutive game, Campbell allowed at least one run in the first inning, as Detroit pushed across two runs courtesy of a Savvy Ferstle 2-RBI single. The Fighting Camels answered the call in the following inning, as they scored three runs in the top of the 2nd.
A wild pitched scored Herring from third to open the scoring for the Orange and Black. With two outs, Taesha DuBoise drew a walk with the bases loaded, plating Leonhardt. Campbell's third run came one batter later, as Schisler singled to second base, which brought Katie Baker home for the team's third run of the game.
Detroit knotted up the game in the bottom half of the inning as Jordan Manno doubled, which scored Cheyenne Willeford. After a scoreless third inning, Campbell tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Abby Perryman singled to the right, which scored Leonhardt and Baker on the play. Two batters later, McCollum flew out to right field, which allowed DuBoise to score from third base. After four innings, Campbell held a 6-3 advantage over Detroit.
The Titans scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, which was answered by McCurry's double to left field in the top of the sixth, preserving the three-run Campbell lead. Detroit erased its deficit in the bottom of the six as Katy Severson connected on a 3-RBI double. The back-and-forth game continued to the top of seventh as Campbell scored twice to take a two-run lead.
Schisler added to her weekend total with an RBI single that scored DuBoise and two batters later, Caroline Smith doubled to right field, which scored Schisler from third base. Detroit answered the call in the bottom of the seventh scoring twice to force extra innings.
Campbell was able to score a pair of runs in the top of the 8th inning and didn't allow Detroit to gain a baserunner in the bottom half to earn the win. Anderson singled with the bases loaded allowing Smith to score and Tullar reached on a fielder's choice to score Cierra Harris.
Baker earned her first win of the season, going 6.0 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out five batters. Alexis Robbins-Kohrs picked up the loss in 4.1 innings of work, walking four batters and allowing five runs.
The Fighting Camels return to the diamond Sunday morning at 9 a.m. to face UMass-Lowell in their final game of the Wyndham Garden Cougar Classic. They return home for the Camel Stampede March 4-6.
