BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Erica Hitch recorded seven points on three goals and four assists to lead Campbell to a 13-11 victory over Fresno State in the Camels' 2016 home opener from Barker-Lane Stadium. Loren Day also scored three goals for the Camels (1-2).
Campbell had to hold off a late Fresno State (2-3) comeback en route to its first victory of the season. Day's final goal of the game gave the Camels a 13-8 lead with 11:14 left to play, it was the largest lead for either side in the contest.
Nicole Ortlieb scored back-to-back goals for the Bulldogs to pull within 13-10 with 4:22 left to play. Kyleigh Westgarth made it a two-goal game with a free-position score at 2:59 on the clock. However, Melissa Placek won a key draw control following the score and Campbell was able to hold possession for the rest of the game to claim the win.
Kayla Reilly tallied four points on two goals and two assists for the Camels, while Placek also registered a pair of assists with three draw controls. Kaki Armiger had a goal with a ground ball and a draw control, while Mackenzie Koeller and Rebecca Sheinfeld also found the back of the cage and registered a ground ball. Day led the way with four draw controls and Amanda Chasin picked up a team-high five ground balls.
The Bulldogs opened the game with three-straight goals in the first 10 minutes of play. The Camels responded with four unanswered scores to take a 4-3 lead with 9:49 left in the first half. Sarah Bloise tied the game at 5-5 with a goal for Fresno State with just under a minute to play before halftime. However, Day and Sara Paul recoded goals in the final minute to send the Camels to the half with a 7-5 advantage.
Each sided traded the first four goals of the second half before scores from Hitch, Reilly and Annie Cook pushed the Camels' advantage to 12-7 with 15:36 left to play. Goals from Bloise and Day over the next four minutes set the score at 13-8 and set up the final 10 minutes of action.
Bloise led Fresno State with six points on a game-high five goals and one assist. Ortlieb registered four goals while Bloise tallied a game-high eight draw controls.
Merredith Bechler earned the win in the cage with a pair of saves in the first half. Kylie Haarhoff played the second half in goal for CU and made five stops. Bulldog starting goalie Natalie Chaffin took the loss in 15 minutes of action after leaving with an injury. Meganne Weissenfels made nine saves in 44 minutes of relief.
The Camels will return to action at Barker-Lane Stadium on Thursday night when they play host to St. Francis (Pa.). The start time will be announced in the coming days due to the Big South Men's Basketball Championship being played on Campbell's campus next weekend.
