Women's lacrosse drops season opener at #4 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. --- An early scoring barrage helped No. 4 Duke claim a 20-4 victory over Campbell in both team's 2016 season opener at Koskinen Stadium on Thursday afternoon. Kayla Reilly led the Camels (0-1) with three points on a goal and two assists.

Katlin Steinbauer finished with two points on a goal and an assist in her collegiate debut. Annie Cook and Loren Day each scored their first goals of the season for Campbell, who finished the contest with 13 shots.

The Camels ended the game on a high note with two goals in the final minute of play. Reilly found Steinbauer in transition, who buried the shot in the back of the net. CU won the ensuing draw and Steinbauer then returned the favor and found Reilly, who scored the game's last goal as time expired.

Duke (1-0), coming off an appearance in the 2015 NCAA Championship semifinals, had seven multi-goal scorers. Kyra Harney, Kitty Morrissey and Oliva Jenner each tallied three goals for while Maddy Acton, Emma Lazaroff, Maddie Crutchfield and Kelci Smesko all had a pair of scores. Harney had a game-high seven points with the help of four assists.

The Blue Devils opened the game with seven goals in the first six minutes of action. Cook registered the first goal of the season for the Camels to the cut the deficit 7-1 with 23:54 to play in the first half.

After a pair of Duke goals, Day tallied her first goal of the season from the eight-meter mark to make the score 9-2 in favor of the Blue Devils. Duke ended the half with six-straight goals to lead 15-2 at the break.

The pace slowed in the second half as Duke registered five goals over 25 minutes of action. CU controlled the ball for the majority of the final five minutes before tallying the final two scores.

Melissa Placek and Rebecca Sheinfeld each had a game-high three draw controls for the Camels while Reilly picked up a team-high four ground balls. Kylie Haarhoff made five saves in goal playing in the second half. Merredith Bechler (0-1) took the loss in the cage despite two saves in the first half.

Campbell will be back in action on Saturday, February 20 on the road in Norfolk, Virginia against Old Dominion. First draw is set for 1:00 p.m.
