BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Davidson scored six unanswered to erase an early 4-1 deficit, edging Campbell 7-4 Friday in the Campbell Invitational opener for both teams.
Campbell (7-7) led 4-1 over the Wildcats (7-6) after a three-run fourth. With one on and one out in the frame, Brian Taylor's first home run of the season, a 2-0 pitch over the wall in left, put the Camels up 3-1. Adam Wyse's bases loaded infield hit scored Parrish to give Campbell a 4-1 lead.
Davidson pulled within a run on Aaron Tovsky's RBI double and Brian Fortier's sacrifice fly.
A bases loaded walk tied the game in the seventh, and a two-run Davidson eighth pulled the Wildcats ahead 6-4. A one-out RBI fielder's choice from Andrew Pope in the top of the ninth tacked on another Davidson run.
Clark Beeker (3-0) went seven innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with five strikeouts in the win. Evan Roberts earned the two inning save, surrendering just one hit with three strikeouts. Davidson did not walk a batter in the game.
Zach Minnick (0-1) took the loss in relief for Campbell, allowing three runs on two hits with four walks in two innings. Campbell starter Grant Yost worked six innings with three runs on seven hits, three strikeouts and three walks. Phil Stokes allowed a run on a hit with two walks in an inning.
Cam Johnson went 3-for-6, knocked in one and scored three times in the win, while Tovsky picked up two RBI and scored twice, going 1-for-1 and walking three times.
Taylor was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs to lead the Camels.
The Campbell Invitational continues Saturday, March 12, with Davidson and Indiana State at 1 p.m., followed by Rhode Island and Campbell at 5 p.m. Indiana State topped Rhode Island 8-2 in the tourney opener.
Sunday's action will include Rhode Island and Davidson at 11 a.m., followed by Indiana State and Campbell a 3 p.m.
