BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Down three runs in the bottom of the ninth, Campbell rallied for two, stranding runners on second and third in a 7-6 loss to Rhode Island Saturday at Jim Perry Stadium.
Rhode Island moved to 3-8 with the win, while Campbell dipped to 7-8 overall.
The Camels trailed 7-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Adam Wyse led off the frame with a walk, moving to second on a Ben Calvano sacrifice. Anthony Lopez doubled to put two Camels on with one out.
Brian Taylor plated a run on a single to the shortstop, and Jimmy Monaghan followed with a pinch hit single through the right side, pulling the Camels within a run.
A strikeout and a groundout to short ended the Campbell rally, preserving a 7-6 win for the Rams.
Tyler Wilson (2-1) earned the win, working six innings with four runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. Tyler Barss (2) was credited with a save, allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout and a walk.
Nick Thayer (4-1) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts.
CU took a 4-2 lead in the fourth on a Calvano two-run single. The three-run Campbell frame also included a RBI fielder's choice from Adam Wyse.
Rhode Island responded with four in the top of the fifth, including a two-out three-run Martin Figueroa homer to go up 6-4.
Figueroa was 5-for-5 with four RBI and two runs in the win, while Ryan Olmo went 2-for-4 with a run.
JD Andreessen went 1-for-2 with his second home run of the season coming in the third. Zach Minnick went 2-for-4 with a run, while Brian Taylor added a 2-for-5 effort with a RBI.
The Campbell Invitational will conclude Sunday with Rhode Island and Davidson at 11 a.m., followed by Indiana State and Campbell a 3 p.m.
Indiana State took Saturday's opener 7-1 over Davidson.
