Campbell splits DH with Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. – In a rematch from a Camel Stampede matchup, Campbell University split its matchups against Appalachian State Wednesday afternoon at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium. Campbell fell in game one 9-0 in five innings and in game two the Fighting Camels held on for a 4-3 victory.

Game one: Campbell 0, Appalachian State 9

Campbell gave up six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and failed to score in the top of the fifth, dropping game one 9-0 to Appalachian State.

The Mountaineers got their first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of a Heather Josey RBI single, scoring Natalie Orcutt. Campbell recorded its first hit in the top of the third inning as Madison Casto singled to left center. Casto advanced to second on a sac bunt and to third on a wild pitch but failed to reach home.

Appalachian State added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning, Jenny Dodd hit a 2-RBI single to left field, scoring Orcutt and Tiffany Taynor. One inning later, they added six runs on four hits, including a solo home run from Pepper Butler and a three-run home run from Orcutt. Cara Parker hit a 2-RBI double to left centerfield to conclude the scoring for the inning and take the 9-0 lead.

Campbell was unable to get a hit in the top of the fifth inning, ending the game due to the eight-run run-rule after the fifth inning. Caroline Smith took the loss, her third of the season, giving up six earned runs and striking out two. Vanessa Ciocatto won her fourth game of the season, yielding Campbell to one hit and fanning four batters.

Game two: Campbell 4, Appalachian State 3

The Fighting Camels got on the board in the top of the first with a pair of runs as Jessica Anderson doubled to right center with one out. Her double plated  Amber Schisler, who also doubled and stole third and Rachel McCollum who singled then stole second.

Appalachian State cut the Campbell lead in half with one run in the second inning as Butler hit a solo home run to left field. The Orange and Black had a quick response as they answered with two more runs in the top of the third inning. After Schisler singled to right field and replaced with Christa Hall as a pinch runner, McCollum hit a 2-run home to centerfield, giving the Fighting Camels a 4-1 advantage.

Neither side recorded a hit until the bottom of the sixth when Appalachian State recorded a pair -nd scored once to draw back to 4-2. Katie Mathewson hit a RBI single down through the left side, scoring Butler from third base.

Campbell recorded two hits in the top of the seventh, but was unable build on its lead. Appalachian State scored once in the bottom of the seventh on a Josey RBI single to center field, scoring Taynor, but the Fighting Camels held on for the 4-3 win after Butler lined into a double play to end the game.

Courtney Roberts earned the win in four innings of work, allowing one run on four hits. Annaleise Kennedy took the loss in two innings of work, giving up four runs, all earned on five hits.

Campbell returns to action for its first Big South series at Longwood beginning with Saturday's doubleheader at 1 p.m.
