Softball drops doubleheader games at Longwood Friday evening

FARMVILLE, Va. – Campbell softball dropped both games of its doubleheader against Longwood Friday evening to open Big South play. In game one, Campbell fell 7-2 and dropped game two 6-1. Amber Schisler recorded a pair of RBIs in the two games combined, the only RBIs for Campbell on the day.

Game one: Campbell 2, Longwood 7

Campbell took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but was unable to hold onto the advantage, allowing Longwood to score seven unanswered in the next three innings, dropping the contest 7-2. Schisler went 2-for-2 in the game, scoring once and drawing a walk. She also had the team's lone RBI of the game.

Campbell made the first mark on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning after Karsen Leonhardt stole third and reached home after a throwing error from the Longwood catcher, Kaylynn Batten.

The Lancers tied up the contest in the bottom half of the inning. Karleigh Donovan singled then stole second allowing Batten to advance to third and eventually come around to score. In the bottom of the third Longwood used seven hits to score five runs and take a 6-1 lead. Four separate RBI singles, including a 2-RBI single by Justina Augustine, powered the scoring for the home side. They added one more run in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to six.

Campbell gained one run back in the top of the fifth inning as Schisler hit a RBI single up the middle, scoring Katie Baker from third. Baker drew a walk in the opening at-bat and was able to move to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a Madison Casto groundout.

The Camels failed to gain a hit for the rest of the game following the RBI single while Longwood was limited to only one hit.

Katie Baker took the loss, her sixth of the season during 5 2/3 innings of work. She gave up seven hits and five earned runs. Sydney Gay picked up her fourth win on the season in 3 2/3 innings, yielding one run and two hits.

Game two: Campbell 1, Longwood 6

Campbell gave up six runs on nine hits while only garnering three hits in game two of Friday's conference doubleheader in Farmville. Similar to the first game, Campbell scored first but it was unable to build and maintain a lead.

Schisler had the team's lone RBI in the contest, going 1-for-2 and drawing a walk, nearly identical to her game one performance.

Bailey Bjorson singled to the right side to begin the third inning and was replaced with pinch runner, Madison Casto, shortly after reaching base. Schisler was able to bring home Casto from first base as she hit a double to left centerfield, scoring the only run of the game for Campbell.

A Carly Adams RBI double scored Glenn Walters in the bottom of the third inning to knot the game at 1-1. Campbell was able to get a runner on with two outs in the top of the fourth but was unable to bring her around to take the lead.

Longwood scored twice in the bottom of the fourth off two consecutive RBI singles. Kelsey Sweeney's single to left advanced Krista Kelly, who scored on a throwing error from the Campbell left fielder. Sweeney was able to get to second on the throw and gain third on a throwing error by the catcher. Jordan Clark then singled, scoring Sweeney.

The Lancers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back home runs, including a two-run home run from Mariah Ellis. Campbell was unable to get a hit in the final three innings of play, gaining only two baserunners in the process.

Courtney Roberts took the loss, her second of the year, giving up six runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched. Elizabeth McCarthy gave up three hits and one run, earning her sixth win of the season for Longwood.

Campbell seeks to avoid the series sweep with game three Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
