BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell belted four home runs, including two from Jimmy Monaghan, to slug its way past North Carolina A&T 14-1 Saturday at Jim Perry Stadium, clinching the nonconference series.
Campbell moved to 10-10 overall with the win, while A&T dipped to 4-16. The Camels also claimed Friday night's opener 10-8. The series continues Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Camels put up five runs in the third and the eighth in the win. In the bottom of the third, Campbell strung together five straight hits, including a two-run homer to center for freshman Zach Minnick.
In the eighth, after Matt Parrish had already tacked on a run with a RBI base hit, Monaghan left the yard for the second time on the day, slugging a grand slam to right to make it 14-1 Camels.
Monaghan, a freshman from La Plata, Md., also homered with one away in the fifth, his first of the season. Monaghan went 3-for-5 on the day with five RBI for the Camels.
Anthony Lopez posted a 4-for-4 effort with three RBI and three runs, leading off the bottom of the sixth with another Campbell home run, his second of the season. The senior added RBI singles in the third and the fourth.
Matt Parrish also drove in two for the Camels, going 2-for-5 with two runs.
Grant Yost (2-2) earned the win on the mound, pitching seven innings with an unearned run on two hits with eight strikeouts and a walk. The right-hander did not allow a hit until two outs in the fifth when Jason King's RBI double scored Forest Kimbrell, who reached on an error.
Chris Walkerow finished out the game, striking out two and walking one.
Will Greene (1-4) was charged with the loss, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 10 hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.
The Camels will be on the road next week, heading to North Carolina Central on Tuesday, March 22, before kicking off Big South play at Charleston Southern March 24-26.
