BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jimmy Monaghan knocked in one and scored twice, while Tyson Messer fanned five to lead Campbell over Duke 5-1 Wednesday night at Jim Perry Stadium.

Campbell (4-4) pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts, including five from starter Tyson Messer (1-0), in the win over Duke (5-4). Campbell has now won six of the last eight meetings with the Blue Devils, avenging a 4-0 loss in Durham last week.

Messer, a freshman right-hander, fanned five of his first nine batters in his first career start. The Lillington, N.C. native tossed three innings with a hit and a walk to go along with his five strikeouts in a scheduled short start.

Phil Stokes pitched a scoreless fourth inning, while Michael Horrell tossed three frames, allowing a run on two hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Zach Minnick pitched the final two innings with a hit, a strikeout and a walk.

Jack Labosky (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 3 1/3.

Monaghan went 2-for-3 for the Camels in the win, breaking through with the game's first hit, a triple into the right-center gap in the bottom of the second. The freshman then scored on a wild pitch to give CU the early lead.

With one out in the fourth, Monaghan singled up the middle and scored on Drew Butler's two-run double two batters later. Butler scored on a passed ball to give the Camels a three-run inning and a 4-0 lead.

Monaghan drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth, making it 5-1 Camels after Evan Dougherty's sacrifice fly for Duke in the top of the inning.

Duke left 11 on base in the loss, while fanning 14 Camels.
