Baker leads Camels past Phoenix

BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Katie Baker pitched a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts and tallied two hits and a RBI to lead Campbell to a 3-0 victory over Elon on Tuesday afternoon at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

A leadoff double for Amber Schisler got things started for Campbell (12-15) in the top of the first. Baker helped her own cause with a single through the right side that scored Schisler to give CU an early 1-0 advantage. After both sides put up zeros on the scoreboard for the next five and a half innings, the Camels added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Cierra Harris drew a one-out walk and stole second before later scoring on a RBI groundout by Melissa Tullar. Chandler Patterson reached base via an error and was replaced by pinch runner Madison Casto. Casto later scored on a RBI single by Lizabeth McCurry, who ended the frame trying to stretch the single into a double.

Baker did the rest of the work for CU in the circle. She fanned a pair of batters in the first two innings before working into trouble in the third. Elon (14-13) loaded the bases with three singles, but the Camel defense ended the inning with a key double play. Baker worked around a leadoff double by Kara Shutt in the top of the fourth as the Campbell infield once again turned a double play to end the threat.

Baker struck out a pair of batters before dishing out her lone walk of the game with two outs in the top of the seventh. She ended the game by striking out the side as the Camels earned the non-conference victory. Baker moves to 3-6 on the season with the win.

Kayla Caruso (3-4) took the loss despite just one earned run in one third of an inning pitched after leaving the game with an injury. Kiandra Mitchum gave up three hits and one earned run with five strikeouts in five and two thirds innings in the circle. Alaina Hall led the Phoenix at the plate with a pair of hits.

The Camels will return to Big South Conference play with a weekend series at Gardner-Webb starting with a Friday doubleheader at 4 p.m.
