Bucs claim game two, even Big South series

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern pounded out 18 hits to top visiting Campbell 18-7 and even its opening Big South series Friday afternoon at the CSU Ballpark.

CSU moves to 11-12 overall and 1-1 in Big South play, while Campbell dips to 13-11 on the season and 1-1 in the league, snapping a six game winning streak.

Campbell rallied for two runs in the eighth and held on to top Charleston Southern 5-4 Thursday night in the series opener.

***SCHEDULE UPDATE: Saturday's series finale has been moved up to an 11 a.m. start due to the threat of rain.

The Buccaneers batted around and posted big innings in the fifth and the seventh, piled up eight runs in the fifth, and another nine after the stretch.

Jon Piriz (1-3) picked up the win, allowing six runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings.

Nick Thayer (4-2) was tagged with the loss, surrendering nine runs on 13 hits in 4 2/3, striking out one.

Cole Murphy and Kevin Hickey both knocked in four for the Bucs in the win, with Murphy going 4-for-5 with three runs. Hickey's grand slam made it 18-6 in the bottom of the seventh.

Cole German, Mason McClellan, Chris Singleton and Ryan Maksim also drove in two apiece for CSU.

Matt Parrish paced Campbell at the plate, reaching base in all five of his at-bats, including a double, a RBI and two runs scored, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. Zack Minnick also stretched his hitting streak to 15 games with a RBI double in the third. The freshman was 2-for-5 on the day.

Jimmy Monaghan also went 3-for-5, while Ben Calvano knocked in three with a bases clearing triple in the first.

Campbell led 6-1 before the Bucs' big bottom of the fifth.
