One-hit effort lifts Campbell to 9-0 win against Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.Katie Baker and Amber Schisler combined for a one-hit shutout in Campbell's 9-0 five inning win against Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon. With the victory, Campbell wins the series, as the teams split Friday's doubleheader.

Baker earned the win, her fifth of the year, going 3 1/3 innings, striking out four. Taesha DuBoise went 2-for-3 on the day with three RBIs. Madison Herring recorded a pair of RBIs for the Camels in the victory.

The Fighting Camels (14-16) scored at least one run in each inning en route to the victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs (13-15). Campbell wasted little time getting on the board in the first inning, scoring twice on two hits. After Baker started with a leadoff double and Amber Schisler drew an eight-pitch walk, Rachel McCollum doubled to right center, scoring Baker from second base.

One swing of the bat, with bases loaded, extended the lead to 5-0, as DuBoise hit a 3-RBI double to left center field, scoring McCollum, Baker and Cierra Harris. Gardner-Webb gained its first baserunner of the day as Megan Gibbons drew a six-pitch walk in the bottom of the second. She advanced one base on a passed ball, but did not gain any closer to home.

CU added two more runs in the top of the third inning as Taylor Campbell singled to left field, scoring Jessica Anderson from third base. Anderson pinch ran for Chandler Patterson who drew a walk to open the inning. After Harris stole second, an errant throw by the catcher allowed Caroline Smith to score from third base, giving Campbell a 7-0 advantage.

Baker returned to the circle in the third inning, an 11-pitch, no-hit inning to keep the shutout intact. In the top half of the fourth, Madison Herring helped Campbell on the scoresheet, hitting a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Karsen Leonhardt. Amanda Gomes broke the no-hitter in the bottom half as she took a full-count single through the left side.

The final run of the game was scored in the top of the fifth as Cierra Harris singled up the middle, plating Madison Casto from second base. Campbell finished the contest with 13 hits, scoring nine times, going errorless in Saturday's rubber match.

Baker won her second game of the weekend, as she won game one of Friday's doubleheader, 6-4. Combined, she pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowed four hits and struck out nine batters.

Campbell returns to action Tuesday afternoon in Buies Creek for a doubleheader against UNC Wilmington beginning at 4 p.m.
