BLACKSBURG, VA. – Campbell pounded out 15 hits and struck out 15 Hokies in a 7-1 win at Virginia Tech Tuesday at English Field.
Campbell (7-5) matched a season-best for hits and set a high for strikeouts in the win. Virginia Tech (8-5) won six of its last seven outings heading into the game.
Nick Thayer (4-0) earned the win in a scheduled short start, pitching three scoreless innings with six strikeouts, two hits and two walks. The senior struck out the side in the first and second.
Wes Noble tossed five innings in relief, allowing a run with three hits, a career-high eight strikeouts and three walks. Both Thayer (first-second) and Noble (sixth-seventh) struck out five in a row in the win. Chris Walkerow finished out the win with a scoreless ninth, striking out one.
CU recorded its most strikeouts since Heath Bowers set an individual school record with 15 punchouts in a win over Bowling Green on March 6, 2015.
VT starter Andrew McDonald (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 4 1/3.
Kyle Prats led the Camels at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. The redshirt senior leadoff man scored the game's first run in the top of the first, coming home on a Brian Taylor RBI single.
With Camels on second and third and one out in the fifth, Prats' single through a drawn in Hokie infield made it 3-0 Camels.
Anthony Lopez went 2-for-5 with a two run triple in a four run Campbell seventh. Jimmy Monaghan and Zach Minnick also drove in runs in the inning. Monaghan went 3-for-5 on the night with a double.
Drew Butler added a 3-for-4 effort, scoring on Prats' two run single in the fifth after leading off the inning with a base hit.
VT left the bases loaded in the first and fourth, with Thayer and Noble strikeouts closing the frames.
Campbell continues its midweek series at Virginia Tech tomorrow. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
