BLACKSBURG, VA. – Grant Maiorana homered and drove in three, helping Virginia Tech to fend off Campbell 11-8 Wednesday at English Field.
Virginia Tech moved to 9-5 with the win while Campbell fell to 7-6 overall. Campbell topped the Hokies 7-1 Tuesday night behind 15 hits and 15 strikeouts.
Maiorana's two-run double in the third broke a 6-6 tie, and his two-out solo home run in the fifth extended the Hokie lead to 10-6. The Hokie designated hitter also scored twice and walked in the win.
Ryan Lauria (1-0) picked up the win for VT, working 2 2/3 innings with a strikeout and two walks in relief. Connor Coward earned the save (1), going two frames with a hit and three strikeouts. VT starter Chris Monaco surrendered six runs, all earned, on eight Campbell hits, striking out one in 2 1/3.
Alex Yarem (0-1) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 2 2/3. Erik Dowse pitched 2 1/3 scoreless, scattering two hits with two punchouts. CU starter Tyson Messer was charged with six runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 1 1/3 innings.
Campbell took a 4-1 lead in the top of the second with a four run, four hit frame. Matt Parrish's single to center tied it up before Adam Wyse doubled, scoring Drew Butler and giving Campbell the 2-1 lead. Kyle Prats' double scored two to make it 4-1.
Five Hokie runs in the bottom of the inning, including Chris Meador's two-run single with the bases loaded, pushed VT back on top at 6-4.
Campbell tied it up in the top of the third, with Jimmy Monaghan's double scoring Brian Taylor, and Zach Minnick's RBI single to center plating Monaghan from second before the three-run VT rally in the home half of the inning.
The Camels picked up two more runs in the top of the seventh on a Drew Butler hit by pitch with the bases loaded and a Matt Parrish RBI single.
Phil Sciretta went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run for Virginia Tech.
Monaghan led the Camels with his second straight three-hit outing, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a RBI and three runs. Parrish and Prats also knocked in two each in the loss.
