BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Despite a complete game effort for Michael Horrell without an earned run, Liberty claimed a 3-0 win Sunday in the series finale at Campbell.
The Flames moved to 20-17 overall and 6-6 in Big South games with the win, while the Camels dropped to 20-17 on the season and 7-5 in conference play. Campbell took the series with 2-1 wins on Friday and Saturday.
Liberty scratched a run in the top of the third on Jack Morris' sacrifice fly, scoring Payton Scarbrough, who reached on a leadoff single and advanced on the first of two CU errors on the day.
In the fourth, Dalton Britt's two out single scored Will Shepherd, who reached on a miscue, and Josh Close followed with a RBI double, making it 3-0 Flames.
Campbell left nine on base in the loss, including three in the seventh. The Camels loaded the bases again in the bottom of the ninth after a pair of base hits and a Liberty error, but a double play to end the game closed the would be CU rally.
Jack DeGroat (2-2) earned the win for Liberty, pitching six scoreless innings with three hits, six strikeouts and three walks. Shane Quarterley picked up the save, going 2 1/3 with two hits and a strikeout for his sixth save of the year. Zach Helsel bridged the gap, working 2/3 of an inning with a strikeout and two walks.
Horrell (3-4) took the loss, allowing three unearned runs on four hits in his first career complete game. The freshman from Thomasville, N.C. struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Britt was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored for the Flames.
Jimmy Monaghan led the Camels at the plate, going 2-for-3.
Campbell Baseball held their annual Alumni Day Sunday, welcoming over 50 former Camels on teams spanning seven decades to Jim Perry Stadium. There also a special recognition for former Campbell All-American and head coach Cal Koonce.
Campbell will head to UNCW on April 19 for the first of a season-long six straight games on the road. The Camels return to Jim Perry Stadium on May 6, beginning a three game Big South series with Presbyterian.
