FARMVILLE, VA. – Longwood pulled ahead with a five run sixth and held on for an 8-4 series opening win over Campbell Saturday afternoon at Bolding Stadium.

Longwood moved to 23-16 overall and 8-5 in Big South play with the win, while Campbell dipped to 20-19 on the season and 7-6 in conference games. The Longwood victory snapped a nine game winning streak for the Camels in the series.

The series was scheduled to begin on Friday night, but rain forced game one to be delayed a day.

The Camels led 4-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth before the Lancers exploded for six straight hits to begin the home half of the inning, including a two run single from Michael Osinski to tie the game. Carlos Garrido's RBI fielder's choice put LU in the lead at 5-4 with one out in the inning.

Longwood tacked on three more in the eighth, starting with a RBI single from C.J. Roth, and held on for the 8-4 lead.

Ryan Jones (2-2) picked up the win in relief, working two scoreless innings with two hits, two strikeouts and a walk. Michael Catlin was credited with the save, his first of the season, fanning three in 1 2/3 scoreless.

Longwood starter Travis Burnette allowed four runs on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Nick Thayer (6-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work. Erik Dowse worked three innings in relief, giving up three runs on two hits with five strikeouts and six walks.

Campbell built a 4-0 lead with a three run top of the sixth before the Longwood answer in the bottom half of the stanza. Adam Wyse, who led off the inning with a base hit, scored on Jimmy Monaghan's squeeze, and Brian Taylor added a run, scoring on an error.

Drew Butler then singled in Monaghan on Jones' first offering, slapping a single through the right side to make it 4-0. The Camels jumped on the board in the second on Ben Calvano's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.

Sammy Miller went 3-for-5 with two runs scored for the Lancers, while Roth and Osinski both knocked in two.

Butler went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a double for the Camels in the loss.

The series wraps Sunday with a noon doubleheader.

Campbell will remain on the road next week, heading to UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, April 26, and North Carolina Wednesday, April 27 before the exam break.

The Camels return to Jim Perry Stadium on May 6, beginning a three game Big South series with Presbyterian.
