BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Three different Camels registered home runs in Saturday's doubleheader sweep, 8-5 and 5-0, of the Winthrop Eagles inside Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. McCollum recorded her 11th home run of the season in game one, while Megan Mozingo and Melissa Tullar hit their first home runs on the season.
Campbell amassed 13 runs on 18 hits along with perfect fielding in the Saturday sweep. Campbell improves to 22-27 overall and 8-12 in conference, while Winthrop falls to 14-37 and 4-16 in league play.
Game one: Campbell 8, Winthrop 6
McCollum's three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning completed the comeback against Winthrop, claiming the 8-6 victory in game one. Campbell scored seven runs over the final two innings in mount its comeback after trailing 6-1 going into the fifth inning.
With the win, Campbell snapped its three-game losing streak, dating back to its win at Liberty April 16.
Campbell began the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on McCollum's RBI single to left field, scoring Katie Baker. Winthrop answered back in the top half of the second with three runs of its own, including a lead off solo home run, tying the contest. A pair of RBI singles extended the Eagles lead to 3-1 after two innings.
Winthrop added three more runs between the third and fourth inning to take the five-run advantage. In the third, the lone run occurred on a RBI groundout by Kim Ryder. The Eagles' two runs in the fourth came off Zharne Glover's two-run home run on the first pitch her at-bat.
The comeback began in the bottom of the fifth inning as Campbell scored three times on four hits. After the first two batters, Megan Mozingo and Cierra Harris, reached and advanced to scoring position, Taesha DuBoise singled up the middle, scoring Mozingo. Two batters later with the bases loaded, Melissa Tullar connected on a RBI single through the right infield gap, scoring Harris. A bases loaded walk concluded the Fighting Camels scoring in the fifth, as they narrowed the deficit to two runs, 6-4.
After another shutdown inning from Amber Schisler in the circle, Campbell went to work in the bottom of the sixth inning, plating four runs to take an 8-6 lead. DuBoise reached on a fielding error, scoring Mozingo to bring the deficit to one run. One batter later, McCollum blasted a three-run home run over the centerfield wall, putting Campbell ahead 8-6. Winthrop got one batter on but was unable to further the inning, as Campbell closed the door, winning 8-6.
Harris finished the contest a perfect 3-for-3, scoring twice. Schisler picked up her fifth win on the season, going five innings for the Orange and Black. Keleigh Romine took her seventh loss, allowing two runs in one inning.
Game two: Campbell 5, Winthrop 0
Megan Mozingo and Melissa Tullar both hit home runs as Campbell shutout Winthrop in game two, 5-0. Baker picked up the win in the circle, pitching five complete innings and limiting the Eagles to three hits.
Tullar's home run came in the leadoff spot in the bottom of the fifth. The sophomore took a 2-0 pitch over the right centerfield wall to extend the Campbell lead to 3-0. Four batters later, with one on, Mozingo connected on her first career home run, over the outfield wall, extending the lead to 5-0.
Campbell began the scoring in the bottom of the first as Chandler Patterson drew a five-pitch, bases loaded walk. One inning later, Campbell doubled its lead to 2-0 on DuBoise's RBI groundout, allowing Mozingo to score from third base.
Baker and Mozingo each went 2-for-2 at the plate, as Mozingo scored twice and recorded a pair of RBIs. Morgan Lowers went 2-for-4 for the Eagles at the plate to lead the team.
Chace Helms picked up the loss, dropping to 1-11 on the season, pitching four innings, allowing four earned runs and walking four batters.
The series finale will begin at 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon inside Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
