Softball upended by Tar Heels, 9-6, Wednesday evening

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina scored in five of six innings Wednesday evening to claim a 9-6 result against visiting Campbell inside Anderson Stadium.

Taesha DuBoise went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI and Amber Schisler connected on her 13th home run of the season for the Fighting Camels. In the circle for UNC, Kendra Lynch went the distance, striking out a career-high 12 batters in the process.

Campbell dropped to 23-28 on the 2016 campaign as North Carolina improved to 27-22 overall on the year.

Schisler's three-run home run in the top of the fifth lifted Campbell to a 6-5 lead, its first lead of the contest. UNC reclaimed the lead for the final time in the bottom of the inning, 7-6, on Berlynne Delamora's two-run home run to left centerfield.

North Carolina began the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a RBI single by Kendra Lynch followed by Kristen Brown's steal of home on a double steal. UNC added one more in the second to jump to a 3-0 lead.

Campbell scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to draw within one, 3-2. With Schisler and Hall on the corners, Taylor Campbell dropped a single down the right field line. A throwing error allowed Hall to score after Schisler trotted in from 60-feet away on the same play. 

Two runs by the home side in the fourth stretched the lead back to 5-2. Campbell answered back in a big way with four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead. After DuBoise's RBI single and a Rachel McCollum walk, one swing of Schisler's bat gave Campbell its first lead, 6-5. UNC's Delamora hit her fifth home run of the year as UNC took the 7-6 lead after five innings.

The Orange and Black earned two runners on base in the top of the sixth, looking to reclaim a lead, but a fly out ended the offensive threat. A throwing error by the Campbell catcher and a single up the middle to extended the North Carolina lead to 9-6 going into the top of the seventh. Campbell gained one runner in the top half of the final frame, but gained no closer on the scoreboard as a strikeout ended the contest.

With her walk in the top of the fifth, McCollum has reached base in 10 consecutive contests for the Fighting Camels. DuBoise's three hits is the fourth time she has accomplished the feat this s­­eason.

Courtney Roberts takes the loss for Campbell, going to 8-11 on the season. She pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing seven runs on nine hits. Lynch went all seven innings for the home side, improving to 23-16.

Campbell concludes the regular season, May 6-7 in Buies Creek against Radford. Senior day festivities will commence between games one and two Saturday afternoon.
