HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. – Eight Camels picked up at least one hit, including three from Drew Butler, leading Campbell to a 9-4 win over Appalachian State Tuesday night at the North Main Athletic Complex.
Campbell (16-14) pitching allowed just one hit after the fourth inning, outscoring Appalachian State (8-21) 6-0 over the neutral site game's final five innings.
The Mountaineers' lone hit over the span came with one on and none out in the bottom of the eighth from Zach Hummel. App. State's last hit before the Hummel single in the eighth was a one out Matt Vernon base hit in the fourth.
Campbell trailed 4-3 heading to the fifth before a sacrifice fly from Anthony Lopez scored Adam Wyse. The Camels took a 5-4 lead on Jimmy Monaghan's fourth home run of the season, a solo blast to right with two out in the sixth.
Matt Parrish's RBI single in the seventh added another run, and Campbell tacked on three in the top of the eighth that including a RBI base hit from Justin Lamazares and a two run single from Brian Taylor to make it 9-4 Camels.
Phil Stokes (1-0) picked up the win in relief, pitching three scoreless and hitless innings with five strikeouts and three walks. CU starter Zach Minnick allowed four runs, three earned on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Erik Dowse fanned four, walked two and surrendered a hit in 1 2/3 innings, while Junior Snow pitched a scoreless ninth with a strikeout and a walk.
Travis Holden (1-1) took the loss, allowing a run on two hits with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Seth Hardin, the App. State starter, allowed four runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Each team registered 14 strikeouts on the night.
Butler was 3-for-5 for the Camels, scoring twice in the win, while Ben Calvano and Anthony Lopez both went 2-for-4. Lopez drove in two, including a RBI fielder's choice in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Calvano scored twice.
Tanner Mann-Fix paced the Mountaineers, going 2-for-5 with three RBI, tripling in two in the second and another run in the fourth on a RBI base hit.
The Camels return to Jim Perry Stadium on Wednesday, hosting longtime rival UNC Wilmington at 6 p.m.
