CONWAY, S.C. --- Erica Hitch scored three second half goals, including the tying and game-winning goal, to lead Campbell to an 8-7 comeback victory over Coastal Carolina on Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium. Kayla Reilly also recorded three goals for the Camels (7-6, 3-1 Big South).
Coastal Carolina (6-5, 2-2) scored four-straight goals to turn a 6-4 deficit into a 7-6 lead with 14:24 left to play. With a little over 10 minutes left on the clock, Reilly caused a turnover at midfield that led to a groundball by Erin O'Hara. The Camels were able to set up in their offensive set and Loren Day found Hitch for the tying goal with 9:56 left to play.
Campbell goalie Merredith Bechler made a key save with 6:56 on the clock and the Camels moved into the offensive zone once more. One minute later, Hitch found the back of the cage to put CU up 8-7 with 5:18 left to play.
The Chanticleers had one final chance to re-tie the game with the ball on offense and 2:23 to go. However, Melissa Placek picked off a pass from the Chanticleers' Gabby Vujanic near midfield and took the ball the other way. The Camels were able to hold possession for the final two minutes of the game and claim the victory.
Day led Campbell with five points on three assists and two goals. Reilly added a team-high four ground balls and three caused turnovers while Placek picked up four draw controls.
Bechler earned the win in the cage making eight saves, the most in a winning effort this season. It was the Camels' first victory over Coastal in the program's four year history after dropping each of the first three contests by four goals or less.
Reilly and Day tallied a pair of goals in the first three minutes of play to give CU an early 2-0 advantage. Coastal answered back with four unanswered scores to take a 4-2 lead at the 18:26 mark of the first half. Day drew the Camels within one and broke a 16-minute scoring drought with her second goal of the game and 11:41 left before halftime.
Reilly went back-to-back to make it a 3-0 run to end the first half and give Campbell a 5-4 lead at halftime. After a 12-minute scoring drought for both sides to start the second half, Hitch scored from the free position to give the Camels a 6-4 lead midway through the final stanza.
Charlotte O'Leary had three goals to lead Coastal Carolina while Sophi Crowther had a pair of scores. Jenna Stover took the loss in goal despite 10 saves. Campbell doubled up Coastal 30-15 on shots and held a narrow 10-7 advantage on the draw. CCU was plagued with 17 turnovers.
The Camels will return to the friendly confines of Barker-Lane Stadium on Saturday when they play host to Liberty. First draw is set for noon.
