FARMVILLE, Va. – The Campbell University (7-4-1, 3-0-1) women's soccer team drew, 2-2, with Longwood (7-4-2, 2-1-1) on Wednesday evening at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
This is the first time that a CU match has ended in a draw since the 2014 season. The Camels last recorded a tie versus Radford, 2-2, on Oct. 1, 2014.
"It's gut-wrenching to give up a goal with nine minutes left when we had a lead in a big conference game like this," said head coach
Samar Azem. "Longwood's a really good team and I have to give them credit. We're going to learn from this experience and keep moving forward."
Azem continued, "They've got four players up top that are very dangerous. We definitely put ourselves in situation where we allowed those players to be dangerous. But I'm proud to see us come back and score two goals."
For the second consecutive match, Campbell overcame a deficit to remain unbeaten in Big South play. Emilie Kupsov gave the Lancers' a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute of play, but the Camels managed to fight back to earn a point in the standings.
Abby Major and
Anna Brantley registered goals in the 51st and 57th minutes, but CU could not answer following a goal by Sheyenne Stretz in the 81st minute.
The first half proved to be a defensive battle between the Big South's top offensive and defensive squads. Campbell registered seven shots in the opening frame, while Longwood fired away five, but the real scoring opportunities were few and far between.
Longwood's best chance came in the 33rd minute, as Kennedy Culbreath corralled a loose ball in the box and fired away a shot from inside 10 yards. However, the CU defense managed to come up with a huge stop to keep it scoreless.
Callie Beckwith and
Shelby Denkert registered shots during the final minute of the opening half during a flurry of offensive action, but both were saved by Longwood goalkeeper Maria Kirby.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, the two squads netted three goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second frame.
Just 27 seconds into the second half, Kupsov put the Lancers' on the board after receiving the ball from Kelly Almeida and beating
Erin Scott one-on-one.
Six minutes later, the Camels responded with a goal of their own to equalize.
Alexa Genas won the ball from just outside the box and passed it to Major, who fired a shot into the upper left corner past Kirby.
Anna Brantley gave Campbell a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute of play with a set piece goal.
Shannon Wratchford delivered a corner kick, and Brantley buried a header into the back of the net for her second career goal.
The CU defense fended off six shots by the Lancers during the following 20 minutes of play before conceding the final goal of the game in the 81st minute of play. Stretz received the ball from Kupsov, split two defenders and put the ball in the net off a deflection off of Scott's glove.
The first overtime period proved to be a defensive battle for the two squads, as neither team managed to register a shot during the 10 minute period. Longwood had three shots and Campbell had one in the final overtime period, but none could get past the defensive sides.
Campbell registered 16 shots over the course of the match to Longwood's 17. The Lancers' held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal, while the Camels led 5-0 in corner kicks. Genas, Wratchford, and
Mackenzie Southern paced the Orange and Black on the attack with three shots each.
Up next, Campbell will continue Big South play versus Liberty on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Osborne Stadium in Lynchburg, Va. For the latest information about Campbell women's soccer, make sure to follow @GoCamelsWSOC on Twitter.
