Camels blank Flames 3-0 behind Heath's big night

Allena Heath's double-double leads CU to the sweep of the Flames

BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Allena Heath put down 17 kills and added 10 digs in Campbell's 3-0 sweep of Liberty in Big South Conference volleyball action from Gore Arena Friday night.

Jessica Stocking added 10 kills for the Camels (12-8, 2-4 BSC), who won their second-straight match. Summer Schuitema dished out 35 assists while Kayla Schanback and Madee Miner each tallied 10 digs apiece.

CU hit .255 for the match, including .351 in the final set, and it was a season-high tally for conference play. The Camels held a 46-32 advantage on the attack.

Campbell held a narrow 7-6 lead early in the third set, but a 4-0 spurt made it a 16-10 Camel advantage later in the game. The Flames (6-12, 3-2) cut the deficit to 17-13 on a kill from Casey Goodwin.

CU led 18-14 and used a 5-0 run to take a commanding 23-14 advantage. Schanback dropped an ace into the back left corner to complete the sweep and the 10-point third set victory.

Goodwin led the Flames with 13 kills while Anna Gragg and Gabrielle Vess each tallied five kills. Vess and Margaret Latchford both had a team-high eight digs and Amaya Williams finished with 17 assists.

Liberty held an 11-8 advantage in the first set, but a kill from Heath tied the game at 13-13 before Hannah Schneggenburger put the Camels ahead with a kill. Back-to-back kills from Heath gave the Camels a 17-15 lead, but LU went back ahead 18-17 off a kill from Vess.

Schuitema dumped a kill over the net to give CU set point at 24-22, but back-to-back Camel attack errors sent the frame to extra points. Stocking recorded a kill in the following rally before Williams was whistled for a bad set to give the Camels the first-set victory.

Liberty raced out to a 7-1 lead in the second set, but the Camels came back and used a 6-0 run to take a 16-15 advantage. A Flame service error and a kill from Heath made it a 22-20 Campbell lead late in the frame.

LU cut the deficit to one, but two errors gave the Camels set point at 24-22. After an attack error from Heath, she ended it with a kill to put the Camels up 2-0 in the match.

Campbell will continue its three-match homestand Tuesday night when it hosts Winthrop. First serve from Gore Arena is set for 7 p.m.
