RADFORD, Va. --- Jessica Stocking put down 16 kills, but third-seeded Campbell was upset by sixth-seeded Winthrop 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-19) Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Big South Championship.
Senior
Summer Schuitema dished out 35 assists in her final collegiate match. Fellow senior
Kayla Schanback recorded with 17 digs in her final appearance in the Orange and Black.
The Camels finished the 2017 campaign with a 20-11 overall record, their first 20-win season since 1998. That record included a 10-6 mark in Big South contests, which matched a program-record in league play.
Allena Heath, the conference's leading attacker, put down eight kills while
Madison Linxwiler tallied nine.
Madee Miner had six digs while
Hannah Schneggenburger added seven kills.
The Camels combated an early 5-3 deficit with a 6-0 run to take a 9-5 advantage in the first set. A kill from
Alysha Mitchell put the Camels up 16-10, and back-to-back kills from Schneggenburger and Stocking made it 20-12.
The Eagles called a timeout after back-to-back errors gave CU a 23-15 lead. Winthrop was only able to draw within 24-17 of the lead before Heath closed out the opening frame with a kill.
Winthrop used a 6-0 run to help claim the seven-point second set victory. It was another six-straight points for the Eagles in the third set that helped Winthrop take that frame and go up 2-1 in the match.
The Camels took an early 5-1 advantage in the fourth set, but two Camel attack errors gave Winthrop a 10-8 lead later in the frame. Two 3-0 spurts helped put the Eagles ahead 18-12.
CU was able to draw within 18-15, and an
Arilyn Maier kill cut the deficit 20-16 a few rallies later. However, Winthrop scored three-straight following the kill and ended up claiming the fourth set by six.
The Eagles will face second-seeded Radford in Saturday's semifinal round.
