Heil, Kober place third at Wolfpack Open

RALEIGH, N.C. – Josh Heil and Chris Kober both collected third place finishes Sunday, highlighting Campbell's day at the Wolfpack Open.

In all, 22 Camels wrestled unattached, placing Campbell fourth in the 33 team event. The Camels combined for 93.5 team points, while North Carolina State, also unattached, took the team title with 257.5 points.

Clarion (154) took the runner-up spot, while Utah Valley (125) placed third overall. Virginia Tech (unattached, 86.5) finished fifth, while Newberry (77), Old Dominion (unattached, 53.5), Virginia (unattached, 48.5), the Blue Blood Wrestling Club (46) and Virginia Tech (40) rounded out the top 10.

After a first round bye at 149, Heil defeated George Mason's Bayne Gordon by a 17-2 technical fall, the first of three on the day for the Campbell sophomore. Heil also took down Duke's Eric Carter with a 17-2 tech fall, and routed Clarion's Brodie Zacherl by a 21-5 score.

N.C. State's Beau Donahue topped Heil 3-2 in the 149 semifinals, but an 8-2 victory over the Wolfpack's Robert Rizzolino gave Heil third in the bracket.

Wrestling at 197 pounds, Kober advanced through the first two rounds on back to back pins, the first over Bryce Walker of UNC Pembroke (2:52), and another over Benjie Hund of Queens (2:38).

The freshman followed that with a 7-4 win over Virginia Tech's John Borst before dropping his only match of the day, 2-1 to the day's 197 champion, Dustin Conti of Clarion. A win by medical forfeit placed the Havertown, Pa. native third.

Ryan DeLoach also placed fourth for the Camels at 184, dropping a 16-0 technical fall in the third place match to Will Sumner of Utah Valley. The Bethlehem, Pa. native won his first three matches of the day via decision.

Paxton Rosen also placed seventh at 125, while Zach Barnes took sixth at 141 for the Camels.

Next up for Campbell will be the Hofstra Duals on December 3. The Camels will return to Buies Creek on January 18, hosting SoCon rival Appalachian State.
