BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Presbyterian scored two first half goals en route to a 2-1 victory over Campbell in the Big South quarterfinals on Sunday evening at the Eakes Athletics Complex.
Campbell finishes the season at 9-7-3 overall, while Presbyterian improves to 6-8-3 on the year and advances to play Radford in the Big South semifinals.
"After halftime, we made some adjustments and played with Big South quarterfinal effort and attitude, but unfortunately we didn't bring it for 90 minutes," said head coach
Dustin Fonder.
Fonder continued, "The team that started the game better, ended up winning and I give Presbyterian credit for that. You have to work, want second balls and bring desire to the match and we didn't bring that same level of urgency in the first half."
The Blue Hose opened the scoring six minutes into the match as Ricardo Hernandez buried a shot from the right side of goal off the far post.
Hernandez got by a sliding defender, cut into the box and his shot from 10 yards away caught the inside of the left post for the opener.
Presbyterian doubled its lead in the 38th minute off the foot of Kellan O'Hara.
Sergio Pinto carried possession down the right side, eluding multiple defenders and slotting a pass to O'Hara from 12 yards away for the goal.
Josh Hughes scored the lone goal for the Camels in the 85th minute off a corner kick.
Hughes curled in a corner kick and
Gideon Betz's header attempt at the near post screened Presbyterian goalkeeper Connor Behrend and the ball bounced into the back of the net.
Campbell had one final attempt off the foot of
JJ Donnelly, but his shot from the top of the box went high. CU had multiple chances throughout the second half, amassing seven shots, many of which just missed the frame of goal.
Donnelly had a pair of opportunities towards goal in the first half, but could not find the back of the net.
In the fifth minute,
Alemu Mercer-Miko slipped a pass through to Donnelly, but his left-footed shot went just wide.
Fifteen minutes later, Donnelly had another opportunity from a similar location, seeking the far post, but his strike was kicked away by Behrend.
Campbell out shot Presbyterian, 15-12, including a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.
Matthew Mozynski concluded his Campbell career with three saves on the night, while his counterpart, Behrend, tallied six.
Nine wins is the second most by Campbell in Fonder's three seasons and CU's third place finish ties the highest finish since rejoining the Big South in 2011.
"This season was a really good foundation to build on. We accomplished a lot of things and we have good, young talented players, but this offseason will be tough because now we have to make the jump from good to great," said Fonder.
Fonder continued, "Along with a good offseason, we have a really good recruiting class coming in, and a combination of those two things can help us compete for a title next year."
