BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell (2-1-0) women's soccer team defeated Chicago State (1-3-0), 9-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Eakes Athletics Complex. This was the largest margin of victory for the Fighting Camels since a 10-0 win over Jacksonville in 1995.
"I was really, really proud of our team," said head coach
Samar Azem. "We approached this game as though we were preparing for one of the biggest games of the season. We focused on our style, on the things that we have to get better at, and on what we want to do in the attack."
Azem continued, "It's not easy to fly in from the Midwest and play in the heat of the South. The score doesn't show it, but they made it difficult for us. A lot of credit goes to those players. They were really putting in a lot of work."
The Camels posted six goals in the first half and three in the second frame. CU had a balanced attack with eight different Fighting Camels recording goals during the match.
Anna Brantley,
Sydney Towns and
Siara Southerland notched their first collegiate goals, while transfer
McKenna de Graaf had her first goal as a Camel.
Erin Scott earned her second win at CU, playing the first half and collecting one save.
Natalya Marcove played the final frame and helped to preserve the shutout for the Orange and Black.
CU played strong offensively in the first 10 minutes, firing away three shots and earning two corner kicks. The Camels broke through the Cougar defense in the 13th minute when
Rosie O'Neal received the ball from
Abby Major and flicked it past the CSU goalkeeper. Four minutes later,
Skylar Wilcox tallied another goal off a shot from 10 yards out, which was assisted by
Alexa Genas.
Campbell earned a penalty kick in the 25th minute of play, and Genas put it in the back of the net to extend the Camels' lead to three goals. Brantley added another goal two minutes later, when she headed the ball past the Cougar keeper off of a corner kick by
Mackenzie Southern.
In the 41st minute,
Shannon Wratchford headed the ball past Chicago State's goalie following a cross into the box by
Emily Erwin. Just 46 second prior to halftime, a CSU defender deflected the ball into the back of her net to lengthen the lead to six goals at half.
Both sides possessed the ball more evenly in the early part of the second half, and CU did not get one past the CSU defense until the 63rd minute. Towns received the ball from Southerland just inside the box and fired into the back of the net from the left side of the box. In the 76th minute, Southerland got a goal of her own, shooting from 15 yards out past the outstretched arms of the Cougars' keeper.
McKenna de Graaf made her Campbell debut in the 81st minute and scored her first Camel goal just one minute later. Wratchford delivered a corner kick to the far side of the goal, and de Graaf was there to head it in the back of the net.
Campbell finished the game with 32 shots, including 16 that were on frame, to Chicago State's one.
Kelly Ann Evans, Genas and Wratchford all posted four shots, which was a team high on the day. In addition, six of the nine goals were assisted, with Erwin, Genas, Major, Southern, Southerland and Wratchford all with one.
CU will conclude its three-game homestand on Thurs., Aug. 31, as the Fighting Camels take on in-state opponent East Carolina. The match is scheduled to begin at the Eakes Athletics Complex at 4 p.m.
