BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell University (6-4-0, 2-0-0) women's soccer team stymied the powerful attack of Radford (8-2-0, 1-1-0) with a 2-0 victory on Wednesday evening at the Eakes Athletics Complex.
"Our girls were phenomenal today," said head coach
Samar Azem. "I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge that Radford is having an incredible year. We came into this game knowing that it was going to be very tough. Our girls rose to that challenge."
Radford came into the game as the No. 1 team in the Big South with only one loss on the year and an undefeated conference record. The Highlanders had scored 27 goals on the season, the fifth most in the NCAA, but did not manage to get past the Camel defense.
Siara Southerland started off the Fighting Camels' scoring with a goal in the 41st minute of play.
Alexa Genas netted her 10th goal of the season in the 83rd minute to extend CU's lead to 2-0 and put the game out of reach for the Highlanders.
Genas is now tied for second in the NCAA in total goals with Florida State's Deyna Castellanos and Ole Miss' Channing Foster and Cece Kizer. The Albuquerque, N.M., native's 10 goals is already tied for the ninth most goals in a season in Campbell women's soccer history.
Erin Scott played a stellar game between the posts for the Camels to earn her third solo shutout of the season. Scott played the entire 90 minutes for CU and posted seven saves in route to the clean sheet.
Campbell came out of the gate strong on the offensive side of the ball, registering eight shots during the opening 20 minutes of play. In the 24th minute, Genas fired away a shot from 25 yards out, but RU goalkeeper Lexi Dean came up with a bobbling save to keep it scoreless.
After recording three shots during the opening portion of the first half, Southerland finally broke through the Radford defense in the 41st minute of play. Southerland received a cross from
Shannon Wratchford at the left post and tapped it into the far corner for her third goal of the year.
Following the late goal by Southerland, Campbell went into halftime with a 1-0 lead over the offensive juggernaut in Radford.
During the opening minutes of the second frame, the Fighting Camels were consistently threatening on the attack.
Hanna Maansson registered a strike from just outside of the box in the 51st minute of play, but the ball went just high of the goal.
Radford's Nelia Perez had two dangerous scoring opportunities in the 56th and 65th minutes of play. In both instances, Scott managed to make diving saves to keep the Highlanders out of the back of the net.
Genas put the game out of reach for Radford in the 82nd minute of play with a goal that gave CU a 2-0 lead. She received the ball from Southerland, dodged a Radford defender and fired away a shot from 10 yards out into the left corner of the net.
Campbell registered 21 shots over the course of the match to Radford's 12. The Camels also finished the game with a 9-6 advantage in shots on frame and a 9-3 lead in corner kicks. Genas paced the Camel attack with six shots, including three on goal.
Up next, the Fighting Camels will host UNC Asheville on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Eakes Athletics Complex in Buies Creek. For the latest information about Campbell women's soccer, make sure to follow @GoCamelsWSOC on Twitter.
"UNC Asheville is a good team. We want to take what we did today and build on it. As much as we're celebrating now, we know that at a certain point in time, the focus turns to UNC Asheville," said Azem.
